With the arrival of cold weather in the Sierra Nevada, people are starting to use their wood stoves and fireplaces. Some newer fireplaces have catalytic converters to reduce air pollution, but it doesn't take many less efficient sources to fill the valleys with smog. Fortunately for photographers, the layers provide an interesting graphic effect to feature in our images. #MountainMonday, curator Michael Russell #GPlusExtract #PlusPhotoExtract https://picasaweb.google.com/107459220492917008623/Fall2011#5669798662504108962

Orionid Meteor Shower Last Saturday Morning (HD Timelapse Video)

Image
Orionid Meteor Shower Last Saturday Morning (HD Timelapse Video) The Orionid Meteor Shower this year was a bit of a dud. I was shooting up at 11,000 feet in the White Mountains and ran my camera for about 4 hours, from 10:40pm Friday until 2:50am, well after the moon came up. To see how a much more active meteor shower looks, here's one of my Perseid Meteor Shower videos from the same location, displayed on the Discover Magazine blog, best viewed full screen: Perseids, Writ Large http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2009/08/25/perseids-writ-large/ I have a number of posts on my blog www.MyPhotoGuides.com * related to night shooting and timelapse videos. Here's one of the more recent ones building on those pasts posts: Create a Timelapse Video of a Meteor Shower http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/08/create-timelapse-video-of-meteor-shower.html I'm curious to see how an HD 720P video gets displayed on G+. I have a ton of timelapse footage that I haven't foun

Circles on G+ with Musicians Open To CC Collaboration?

Circles on G+ with Musicians Open To CC Collaboration? A lot of the photographers on G+ also produce timelapse movies, which are best set to music. Music can make our visual work more compelling, stunning visuals can make your music more compelling. Rather than go the common online route of simply using whatever's convenient, it would be great to use the community and features of G+ to introduce visual and musical artists willing to collaborate, and help them come together. I've searched collections of Creative Commons work, but it's really difficult to find quality instrumental tracks (I can't set all my videos to techno). Perhaps we can start by creating a circle of musicians who already have trailer or soundtrack-compatible cc music, or who at least would like to receive and consider specific collaboration opportunities? Some of the folks on G+ producing timelapse videos are pros, some are wrapping up feature films, many have large followings to give some nice visibi

How Your Photos on Google May Be Used

How Your Photos on Google May Be Used I'm not going to offer any opinion on whether this is good or bad, just let you know so you can decide whether or not to share things to "Public", and whether or not to participate in these scripts. Your photos may be offered by the Google API to other sites. What would be interesting to research is whether those sites may be commercial (Flickr bans commercial use of its community's images, but a lot of the use of Google's community photos on Panoramio does seem to be commercial... might be worth looking in the G+ Terms and Conditions). Broadcasting... Is There Anybody Out There?

Broadcasting... Is There Anybody Out There? The oldest life form on the planet broadcasts a cry for help. One for the Ages: Bristlecone Pines Break 4,650-Year Growth Record http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=great-basin-bristlecone-pine-growth-rate-tree-line _"If the ceiling for Great Basin bristlecone pine growth does rise, these trees would join the ranks of organisms around the world whose habitats have shifted to cooler altitudes and/or latitudes in response to climate change."_ Before I get hate mail from people who subscribe to anti-science voodoo, I'd like to clarify that this doesn't mean that I support any of the current half-baked proposals marketed as doing something about the challenge. The only things which might address the global nature of this, a unified global approach, slowing emission growth from unchecked economic growth in the heaviest-polluting countries, and stopping emission growth from population growth, are too taboo for politic

Is Klout a Useful Concept for Social Media Users, i.e. Non-Consultants? I can't say I have an informed opinion about Klout yet, but I've just added the main networks that I use (G+ and to a lesser extent *Flickr*). From what I've seen, Klout may have their work cut out for them if they have aspirations to make themselves valuable and relevant to people outside the social media marketing consultant niche. Regardless of Klout's current or future relevance, I do like the idea of connecting and interacting across multiple networks... not putting too many eggs in one basket, so I welcome responses of people open to interacting on other networks: http://twitter.com/#!/JeffSullPhoto http://www.facebook.com/JeffSullivanPhotography http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysullivan/ http: www.activesole.blogspot.com http://klout.com/#/JeffSullPhoto If nothing else, on Klout there are some special offers for people with scores over 40, like 100 free MOO Cards : http://klout.com/#/per

Dark Side of the Moon

Image
Dark Side of the Moon A thin sliver of a crescent moon sets behind a distant ridge, leaving only the dark side of the moon, illuminated by "earthshine," reflected light from the earth, visible on the moon's night side. How earthshine works is shown on this NASA page: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2002/12apr_earthshine/ In simple terms, when the sun is on the other side of the moon and we have a dark "new moon," an observer on the moon would see a large, bright, "full earth"! Compare your local moon set times with sunset times over the next 2-3 days. In very clear skies you may be able to capture the tiny 2% sliver of the crescent moon from 14 to 11 degrees up in the sky from 6 to 6:15pm during sunset on Friday (approximate times here in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere). On Saturday a brighter 6.8% crescent moon will descend from 21 to 18 degrees elevation during a 6 to 6:15pm sunset. There are a number of smart phone apps

Here's another image from last weekend in California's Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest for Tree Tuesday, showing the harsh environment that these trees grow in at an elevation of 11,000 feet. #TreeTuesday curated by Christina Lawrie https://picasaweb.google.com/107459220492917008623/Fall2011#5667497158891632482

Photographing the Southwest author Laurent Martres is now on G+

Image
Photographing the Southwest author Laurent Martres is now on G+ If you're not familiar with Laurent Martres, he literally "wrote the book" on photography travel in the Western United States with his award-winning Photographing the Southwest series ( www.PhotoTripUSA.com ). After three books of his own, he enlisted the help of Greg Vaughn to complete one on Oregon. More recently he has recruited Gary Crabbe and I to cover California in two halves, North and South. Laurent's books can save you years of scouting and many hundreds of dollars in travel costs trying to figure out the best places to shoot, time of day and seasonal considerations, and so on, for the price of a few gallons of gas (which you will now use more effectively). Believe me, I know... covering half of California in detail is no small feat, even though I'd already been living in and exploring the back roads and wilderness areas of the state for decades! Welcome Laurent... we'll be looking forw

Oldest Life on Planet Earth

Image
Oldest Life on Planet Earth A shot from California's Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest last Thursday night. These trees grow very slowly in harsh conditions at 9,000-11,000+ feet in elevation. The oldest one discovered so far is over 4600 years in age! That tree was alive when the Great Pyramid of Giza was being built. The exact identity and location of that tree is a closely guarded secret, to prevent vandals from damaging or killing it. It was frustrating while shooting the moon set behind the Golden Gate Bridge earlier this month to have a steady stream of container ships flowing in and out of the Golden Gate Bridge. Then it was sobering to comprehend the millions of families affected as those manufacturing jobs were moved overseas. American consumers can restore hundreds of thousands of jobs to the country by buying American-made goods. You can build an entire house, down to every nail, from American-made products: Where You Can Buy Made in America Building Products http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2011/10/how-to-build-a-made-in-america-home/ As a side benefit, you'll reduce oil consumption and air pollution by eliminating the trans-ocean shipping, support the value of our currency by reducing trade imbalances and the flow of capital out of the country, and reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses which may cost all 7 billion of us dearly in necessary adaptations to climate change over the coming decades.

I use this analogy a lot.

I use this analogy a lot. Then again, like a good camera and set of lenses in the hands of a skilled photographer, a good stove and set of pans in the hands of a good chef can really make the food shine. Originally shared by Margareth Osju It's not a camera that make a photographer.:)
