Moody Storm Light

Image
Moody Storm Light After a Winter which was relatively dry and cold, Spring has arrived with the storms missing from Winter. Rain, snow, wind... and occasionally, some stunning light. I've added 7 photos to the front of this album to share some of my favorite moments from the past few days... at least the ones where I had my camera handy! Of course the best evening was one when I didn't have my camera along. I was going to spend the weekend with my kids, and I had decided to take a weekend off from photography. I enforced that intent by not bringing my camera. Of course the moment I was driving back into the West Walker River basin the light was about as incredible as I've ever seen it anywhere... a beam of light striking one hillside on the mountains on the eastern horizon, and radiating back out in rays from there. Of course it was all over by the time I reached my camera about 2 minutes later. Live and learn... never underestimate the potential to see something st

Under a Fiery Sky

Under a Fiery Sky I'm looking forward to the upcoming photowalk in early June... here's the kind of light we often enjoy in the Eastern Sierra in late Spring! This was taken in May 2010. The photographer is Laura Tidwell, who has recently joined G+. (You may know her from a photo sharing site where she participated for years under the screen name Laura Travels.) If you get the chance, drop by her stream and check out her work. For more information on the photowalk: https://plus.google.com/b/112689391100142840168/112689391100142840168/posts/cDaXLj6DDJC

See Most Popular G+ Posts From Your Favorite Photographers

See Most Popular G+ Posts From Your Favorite Photographers Recently I shared information on the cool Timeline feature by Jari Huomo, which can analyze and rearrange posts from your G+ stream. He pointed out that he also has a Most Popular feature which can identify and display the most interesting posts from anyone's G+ stream. The site displays the top most popular posts large on black, in the following examples the top10 G+ photographers on the Top 500 Photographers list ( http://gpc.fm/l/top500 ). Night Timelapse of Lunar Rainbows in the Mist of Yosemite Fall

Night Timelapse of Lunar Rainbows in the Mist of Yosemite Fall The moonbow is only visible of course when a gap in the clouds enables the sunlight bouncing off of the full moon to shine onto the mist near the base of the fall. Talk about a bank shot! Fortunately it's all predictable, so I'll be back to take in this sight all over again in May. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9yWW7h094I

Enter to Win a Canon 5D mark III: a Fine Tool for Night Photography

Image
Enter to Win a Canon 5D mark III: a Fine Tool for Night Photography The new Canon 5D mark III and Nikon D800 are likely to each have advantages for specific photographic situations. One thing the new Canon 5D mark III is likely to be particularly good at is night and low light photography. I'm looking forward to seeing low light examples from each, but in the meantime Pictureline.com will giving a Canon 5D mark III away! No purchase necessary... use this link to enter: http://bit.ly/H5fply #plusphotoextract

"Moonbow"... Night Rainbow in Lower Yosemite Fall

Image
"Moonbow"... Night Rainbow in Lower Yosemite Fall I'm looking forward to Spring waterfalls, vernal pools, wildflowers and of course rainbows at night, created the light of the full moon! For this particular site, it's a good idea to wear rain gear. Seriously. The downdraft of wind created by water falling in the several stages of Yosemite Fall carries the spray and drives it horizontally into your face (and camera). You take a shot or two, move to the side behind some trees to wipe off the filter in front of your lens, cover the camera and bring it back out, to uncover just in time to capture the next shot. There are other locations which are further from the waterfall, where you won't have such an interesting time trying to take shots, but it's worth shooting here at least once for the unique experience. #StarryNights #LongExposureThursday curators Francesco Gola and Le Quoc
