Stormy Day in Bodie

Image
Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Photography Stormy Day in Bodie At lest a couple of dozen photos from the July 29 night photography workshop are included in the Bodie Photography Workshops album. Torrential rains came to town at 3 pm, just as many workshop participants were leaving town to join us for a pre-workshop dinner at Virginia Creek Settlement. The rain cleared the air of smoke from California's wildfires, then the clouds added to the drama in the sky through golden hour and into sunset, but as often happens, quickly broke up for night photography. It was perfect photography workshop weather! Our remaining Bodie workshops in 2016 are getting pretty full, so I'm looking into potentially adding a date in October. Let me know if you want to hear about 2017 dates once I have them. The most popular dates do fill quickly these days. http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/ #nightphotography   #photographyworkshops   #easternsier...

Milky Way Over Bodie Church

Image
Milky Way Over Bodie Church I'm always looking for new angles on my favorite subjects in the Wild West town of Bodie. This mid-October position for the Milky Way is about as far west as it was going to get, so our workshops in Bodie last week seemed like a perfect time to pursue this reverse angle composition. Bodie Open Until 10 pm Tonight, with Supermoon Rise

Image
Bodie Open Until 10 pm Tonight, with Supermoon Rise Bodie is offering one of its Ghost Stories tour nights tonight, which means that they let other park visitors stay late too.  It's also a "supermoon" full moon today, and in a setting like Bodie with an eastern horizon about 3.5 degrees in elevation it'll rise over the apparent horizon during or right after peak sky color, about 20 minutes after sunset.  It gets fully dark around 9:04 pm, so you can also have nearly an hour of full moon night photography before the park closes.  As you can imagine, the park can be super crowded on a night like this, so don't expect to have it, or any particular subject, to yourself, but for the novelty of the overall experience or for practice shooting interesting subjects (and people) under full moon lighting, it's nice that the park makes such opportunities available. For a much longer, much less crowded experience, we have two more nights left in Bodie this year, October 1...

Night in Bodie Under Broken Clouds

Night in Bodie Under Broken Clouds Main Street Bodie reflection from our July 11 night photography workshop.  The clouds took a while to clear on this night, but it provided the opportunity to capture some unique photos! #nightphotography   #photographyworkshops   #Bodie   wwwlJeffSullivanPhotography.com

Milky Way Over Bodie Firehouse

Milky Way Over Bodie Firehouse Bodie Firehouse just after midnight during our June 13 night photography workshop in Bodie.  It looks like we have enough experienced/returning night shooters in our workshops this Saturday to open up a couple of spots for interiors only and night only.  I'll add them to the enrollment buttons later today:   http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/ #nightphotography   #photographyworkshops   #ghosttown   #Bodie   Bodie Photo Workshops  www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com

Exploring an American Ghost Town

Image
Exploring an American Ghost Town I received a preview unit of the new LG G4 smartphone last week, just in time for a workshop I was leading last Wednesday in Bodie.  The first photo is an unedited HDR mode photo, the rest went through my usual workflow of making a few minor adjustments in Adobe Lightroom.   These were some of my first photos taken on the phone, so I mainly used Auto and HDR modes.  The HDR mode was critical to eliminating blown out skies and evening out the uneven lighting indoors.   Over the following days I started exploring the option to shoot close-ups, work with RAW file output.  The RAW output offers increases quality when you have time to post-process it, and a matching JPG for when you don't: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2015/05/18/new-lg-g4-smartphone-review-raw-file-output/ I have 34 samples in my LG G4 album so far, mostly from the afternoon walking around Bodie:  https://plus.google.com/photos/+JeffreySullivan/albums/6150346956545894305 I...

Light Painting Bodie on a Moonlit Night

Image
Light Painting Bodie on a Moonlit Night We like to offer night photography workshops with a variety of moonlight scenarios.  Our latest October 4 access offered a mostly-full moon which reduces the number of visible stars, but the stronger lighting on the town enables shooting at lower ISO settings and smaller apertures.  In this 30 second exposure I lit the headlights and gas pumps while one of my customers lit the truck bed and rear window. #lightpainting   #nightphotography   #photoworkshops   #Bodie   Bodie night photography workshops: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

Bodie Church in the Moonlight

Image
Bodie Church in the Moonlight Here's an awesome star trails image by Swee Oh particularly nice since it was her first one!  Bodie is a cool place to shoot at night, and moonlight enables the town and landscape to show up well with minimal noise in your photos. We had a full moon on that night in June 2012, and we'll enjoy similar conditions when we return to Bodie this Saturday, October 4 with the moon 84% full. For that visit to Bodie, we gathered photos after the trip in a group on Google's Panoramio site, it's sad to see that Google site going away. Bodie's Burning Man

Image
Bodie's Burning Man I used "El Wire" to illuminate one of my customers Saturday night in Bodie.  I save my photography and light painting purchases on Amazon so my customers can find them again:  http://astore.amazon.com/jeffsulliphot-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=21 I try to stick to sellers which offer Amazon Prime 2 day shipping directly from an Amazon warehouse.  My book should be on Amazon later in the year!  ;-) We will be back in Bodie for our next night photography workshop this Friday night July 25!  It was scheduled on short notice, so we still have room if you might like to join us: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/ #photographyworkshop   #nightphotography   #Bodie  Bodie Photo Workshops

Results From Recent Workshops at Bodie

Image
Results From Recent Workshops at Bodie I've expanded this album in recent weeks to include the Sept 22, Oct 6 and Oct 7 workshops in Bodie State Historic Park, California.  I just added more images this morning, drop by and check them out if you have the time! Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Enjoyed the Workshop Last Night Bodie State Historic Park sits at an elevation of 8300 feet a few miles east of the Sierra Nevada, a short distance north of Mono Lake.  The largest and best-preserved ghost town in the American West, the park has started allowing limited night access for photography workshops.   There were dramatic storm clouds building in the afternoon as we scouted the town for interesting night shots.  By the time we assembled at the front gate to start our session, there were columns of rain falling all around the town from the larger, darker masses of clouds.  As we assembled our gear we made adjustments to what we'd wear and carry to account for the possibility of r...
