Nice coverage by Philip Plait (Bad Astronomy blog on Slate) of the January moon rise I enjoyed at Mono Lake last month with Lori Hibbett Amy Heiden Tran Mai Blair Pountney Schmoo Theune and Travis Theune:  Moon Rise over an Arsenic Lake http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/02/25/the_belt_of_venus_moon_rise_into_the_earth_s_shadow.html Phil's drawing and explanation of the Belt of Venus is much better than I've produced. http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/02/25/the_belt_of_venus_moon_rise_into_the_earth_s_shadow.html

Spring Wildflowers in Southern California

Spring Wildflowers in Southern California To help you pick places to go for wildflowers, and best times to go there, I've created an album with 150+ wildflower images from Southern California (Yosemite to San Diego).  It's more or less by place and then time, but ordered the places by peak bloom time as well.   I've made the album available via a post in the new Southern California Photography community I created here on G+ yesterday (filed under the Spring Wildflower discussion thread), and I'll post links to a number of Southern California themed albums in the community description in the left column as well. Wildflower blooms are sporadic from year to year and can vary in timing by weeks as well, so while it's great to plan ahead, it's also important to research current conditions for that year, in that place, before you go.  Super-detailed directions would be a little pointless in many cases, since upon arrival you have to adapt to that particular year's

In case you missed the invitation on my personal stream, I've formed a community for Southern California Photography.

In case you missed the invitation on my personal stream, I've formed a community for Southern California Photography.  In the short term I'm looking for possible photos for my upcoming guide book (I posted a list of sites to the community).  Later I'll add park/region threads for general discussion of things like current wildflower conditions , etc.   It's a semi-private group (to minimize potential spam) for posting your original photography or inquiring about sites.  If you visit the community you may request to join. Sensitive sites are encouraged for more general identification (park or region), so we don't contribute to environmental degradation or vandalism (for example, given recent petroglyph theft in the Eastern Sierra, I'm not planning on including any petroglyph sites which people can visit unescorted).

More Details on the Book Project; Accepting Photo Nominations

More Details on the Book Project; Accepting Photo Nominations The first collaborative activity I'd like to coordinate through the new Southern California Photography community I've created on G+ is to collect photo/location nominations for my upcoming guide book to Southern California landscape photography locations.  I'd like to include as many G+ photographers as possible, perhaps as many as 15 or more.  Posting photos in the community will help make the selection process manageable between you, the publisher and I. The final book will be available in print format at 320 to 400+ pages, and also distributed in ebook format, in the series including the volume recent released by Gary Crabbe for Northern California (link below).  There's a standard contributor agreement with the publisher Laurent Martres; compensation is in the form of a quantity of copies of the book, which you can sign, sell or include with sales promotions of your work to show off your accomplishment t

Guide Book to Southern California Landscape Photography Locations

Guide Book to Southern California Landscape Photography Locations I'm wrapping up a draft of the manuscript to send to the publisher, so I'll be seeking and evaluating photos to include... details to follow shortly in upcoming posts native to this page (so context will not be lost in shares of the posts). Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Want To Have Your Southern California Photograph Published? Here are a few more photo candidates for my upcoming guide book to Southern California landscape photography locations.  I use the term phrase "Southern California loosely.  The book will cover from Yosemite to Santa Cruz in the north to San Diego in the south.  I'll have the opportunity to include a limited number (say 10-20) of photographs from other photographers in this book, part of the award-winning series published by Laurent Martres, described at www.PhotoTripUSA.com .   I'll announce more details on that opportunity in the next week or two; let me know if you ha

Nice to see my son Thomas Sullivan's astrophotography photo on display at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich (first image on left). If you happen to be in or passing through London, this is the last week to see the exhibition. There's also a book of 4 years of photos, and an inexpensive smart phone app: http://www.rmg.co.uk/visit/exhibitions/astronomy-photographer-of-the-year/ Congrats again Thomas! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=473958659320577&set=a.149703431746103.32336.136637646386015&type=1&theater https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=473958659320577&set=a.149703431746103.32336.136637646386015&type=1&theater
