Perseid Meteor Shower 2016

Image
Perseid Meteor Shower 2016 I've been chasing every meteor shower that I could see with my camera since 2009. This year's Perseid meteor shower was one of the best I've experienced so far. These are "work in progress" shots, where I've saved the images with meteors in them, and brought those into one composite image. http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/ #nightphotography   #astrophotography   #photographyworkshops   #easternsierra   #california   #canon   #6D

Tranquility

Image
Tranquility A shot from my testing of the Canon EOS 6D body I picked up last month. I had been shooting it like I had been shooting my Canon EOS 5D Mark III for the past few years, but it turns out, as is often the case, that the newer camera deserves its own unique approach. There's no substitute for performing your own exhaustive research on your new cameras, so you can best integrate any extended capabilities into your workflow. My Bodie, Eastern Sierra and White Mountains/Bristlecone Pines workshop customers will be getting an earful in the next 2 weeks. Even though the 6D is only about a year newer than the 5D Mark III, I couldn't do this with the older model. The 6D model is now a couple of years old, so I have very high expectations for what Canon can accomplish with the rumored 5D Mark IV model that may be coming this fall! #Canon   #astrophotography   #landscapephotography   Jeff Sullivan Photography  www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com

Venus Transit of the Sun

Image
Venus Transit of the Sun While everyone is capturing images of the Mercury transit today, here are some Venus transit images in the meantime. I post-processed these yesterday from my folder of images from the June 5, 2012 event. http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/05/09/mercury-transit-of-the-sun-coming-may-9/ #astrophotography   #Canon   #5DMarkIII   #400mm   Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Mercury Transit of the Sun is Underway! With a proper eye-protecting filter, the planet Mercury can be seen crossing the face of the sun today. This happens approximately 13 times per century. I'll have my photos available later, but in the meantime, here are some of my photos from the Venus transit of the sun on June 5, 2012, which won't occur again for another 100+ years! I looked at my photos from the Venus transit to remind myself of appropriate practices and settings for the #mercurytransit , as discussed on my blog: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016...

Milky Way Photography Season Has Arrived!

Milky Way Photography Season Has Arrived! We're starting to get the Milky Way rising at reasonable evening hours in the Northern Hemisphere, so pick your subjects close to moonless new moon dates! #astrophotography   #easternsierra   #Canon   #california   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Departing Clouds in Bodie In the summer, the Eastern Sierra often has afternoon thunderstorms, driven by heat and monsoon moisture. Fortunately once the "engine" for the convection, the heat of the sun, goes away, the clouds tend to break up and/or drift eastward, leaving a stunningly clear view of starry skies. #milkyway   #nightphotography   #photographyworkshops   #500px   http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/ https://500px.com/photo/152681009/departing-clouds-in-bodie-by-jeff-sullivan?utm_medium=googleplus&utm_campaign=nativeshare&utm_content=web&utm_source=500px

More Photos and Notes from Death Valley, Feb 2016

More Photos and Notes from Death Valley, Feb 2016 The park still doesn't quite call it a "super bloom", but it's at least above normal, as I discuss in a new blog post: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/02/24/more-photos-and-notes-from-death-valley-feb-2016/ #desert   #wildflowers   #deathvalley   #february2016   #landscapephotography   #travelblogger   #Canon

New Death Valley Images from 2015 Visits

Image
New Death Valley Images from 2015 Visits I'm working on a detailed guide to photography locations in Death Valley, so I'm finding a lot of nice photos from there from the past 10 years that I've been exploring the park. I found quite a few nice locations and compositions in Death Valley in 2015. You can see many of my photos in a 2015 album on my Death Valley Workshops page on G+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/116469806647181209109/116469806647181209109/posts In most years I've been too busy to collect my Top 10 photos for the prior year, but this year I started off the year sick, so I caught up on ten years of Top 10 collections in my down time. Here are my new "Top 10 From The Last 10" blog posts: 2015 Top 10 Travel Photos http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/01/02/top-10-travel-photos-2015/ 2014 Top 10 Travel Photos http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2016/01/09/top-10-travel-photos-2014/ 2013 Top 10 Travel Photos http://www.jeffsulli...

Sunset Moon Rise Coming December 24

Moon, Venus Comet Conjunction

Moon, Venus Comet Conjunction As I predicted six days ago, the conjunction of the moon, Venus with Comet Catalina was pretty cool this morning, and it'll get even better to pursue tomorrow morning:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/12/moon-comet-catalina-venus-conjunction.html #Canon   #Astrophotography   #comet   #Catalina

Sunset Moon Rise Coming December 24

Sunset Moon Rise Coming December 24 The next great sunset moon rise at Mono Lake is coming on Christmas Eve, around: 4:35 - 4:55 pm. See you there? #canon #astrophotography #CanonFanPhoto Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Shoot the Full Moon at Sunrise/Sunset, 3 Times Tonight and Tomorrow With only 12-13 full moon dates each year, I like planning ahead to catch the moon rising at sunset and setting at sunrise. You ahve three opportuniteis to catch great moon shots by tomorrow evening: 1) Tonight here in the Eastern Sierra, the 98% full moon will rise at 6:36pm, a little more than 30 minutes before the 7:10pm sunset, so I can choose a low shooting position to catch the moon near something 6.1 degrees up in the sky right at sunset. 2) The full moon will set tomottow morning at 6:56am, shortly after the 6:36am sunrise, so it will be a short distance up in the sky and I should try to be somewhere which enables me to catch it setting behind the crest of the Sierra Nevada at 6:30am, when i...

Afternoon Light at Mesquite Flat

Water is Back in Death Valley

Image
Water is Back in Death Valley Visit soon, as water doesn't last long in a valley that receives only 1.9" of rain each year! #deathvalley   #water   #photography  Death Valley Workshops  Originally shared by Death Valley Workshops Lake Manly is Back in Badwater Basin! Lake Manly forms in the Badwater Basin when enough rain falls in the surrounding mountain ranges to leave a pool of water.  Recent rains have formed Lake Manly, and it will resurface the salt flats with a fresh coat of white, but it often does not last long under Death Valley's baking sun. It's always a good idea to check the Death Valley Road Conditions page before visiting:  https://www.facebook.com/DeathValleyRoadConditions/?fref=ts http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/death-valley-photography-workshop-2013/ #deathvalley   #Badwater   #landscapephotography   #Canon

Twilight Light Painting

Image
Twilight Light Painting In addition to the headlights and a light in the interior, I used the fading twilight light coming over the horizon to the left for fill and back light, and used a cool (blue-white LED) flashlight as the main key light to the right. In portrait photography it's common to think of the key light as front-lighting the subject, but I didn't want too much light on the grill, to preserve the contract of the headlights vs. the dark front, and the overall mood of a slightly enlivened hulk of a car. With roughly a quarter of a million visitors to Bodie each year, some say that this 1937 Chevy is the most photographed car in the world. I have plenty of photos of it myself, but I like to try different photographic treatments.to explore what more can be done with it. As storms start to drop snow at Bodie's 8375 foot elevation we're done with our 2015 workshops there, but we should have dates for next summer in early 2016: http://www.jeffsullivanphotograph...
