Explosion of Sandstone

Image
Explosion of Sandstone One of my favorites from my road trip this month to Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona. More photos from this place: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2018/05/20/white-pocket-arizona/ I saw the clouds moving so I knew a long exposures would be best. Fortunately it was pretty deep into twilight, so I was able to use a circular polarizer as a 2-stop ND filter to lengthen exposure, cut glare from sand crystals in the rock to get the full color (make the clouds pop a bit), and combine 8, 15 and 30-second exposures in Photomatix HDR software to fully extract rock texture (while blending in in the longest exposure to preserve the cloud movement and not have too much of an "HDR-look"). The f-stop ended up being f/8 and I had to raise the ISO to 640 by this point, but at 16mm there was more than enough depth of field, and the noise wasn't bad after I knocked it down a bit more on the underexposed and 0EV images. That's what's gre...

Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Report, October 5

Image
Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Report, October 5 After seeing a TV news report "Peak Eastern Sierra fall colors, last chance!" referring to this location which frankly looks 80% green and 1-3 weeks from peak to me, I've started a group for crowdsourced reporting of current fall colors conditions in the Eastern Sierra: https://www.facebook.com/groups/easternsierrafallcolors/ Being a relatively high location for aspen in the area, Conway Summit can be a good indication of what's coming over the next couple of weeks. You can see in this photo from Thursday 11/5 one nice patch of yellow near the top. The rest has some lightening green with some nice burnt orange tips that developed after the September storms. It could be great by the end of next week. The rest of the area is similar: pockets of color when you search, but plenty of green trees in reserve for the next 1-3 weeks (barring storms and major wind events). I covered Mono County from June Lake Loop to Walker last week...

Marketing Efforts Benefit From Using Competent Photography

Marketing Efforts Benefit From Using Competent Photography This may be a "news flash" for some, for people who try to cut corners at everything. This may be a "news flash" for some, for people who try to cut corners at everything. Many people know by now that using a photo is useful, even critical, but what impression are you forming with that photo, are you making the most of the opportunity? - Posts that include images produce 650 percent higher engagement than text-only posts. - People form a first impression in a mere 50 milliseconds. Source: https://www.inc.com/larry-kim/visual-content-marketing-16-eye-popping-statistics-you-need-to-know.html If the people you are trying to reach are forming their impression within 50 milliseconds, when you need photography for your marketing efforts or online activity (social media posts, ads or Web site), use the highest quality photographs. Final Leg Home, Without My SUV!

Final Leg Home, Without My SUV! Not long before this 3000-mile trip I had just bought new tires, completed some repairs and had the oil changed, but you just never know what's going to happen on the road.  Here's how the story ends, as I head home in a rental minvan: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2015/10/22/final-leg-home-without-my-suv/ I'm posting the story of this trip in installments, in reverse order, so that once they are all posted on my blog, they can be read straight through in chronological order to the end, no matter what section new readers may arrive in.   Here's the new post describing the prior day, leaving Grand Teton and the loss of my SUV: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/?p=90322 www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com/blog #roadtrip   #travel   #photography   #blogger

Revisiting the Original G+

Image
Revisiting the Original G+ It's nice to see the engagement and dialog that was present and possible early on on G+, like this post from August 30, 2011.  What might have become of G+ if content, engagement and friendships had been allowed to grow organically? This was one of three albums of photos I assembled from a month of travels around Turkey the year before, in Istanbul, along the coast, and to ancient sites away from the coast.  The trip was a wonderful experience, fueling my desire to travel more as time and finances permit. #travelphotography   #adventure   #travel   #Turkey   www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Istanbul, Turkey I've been to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, so I wanted to try something a little more adventurous this time. I heard a fair amount of warnings before the trip (given all the propaganda Americans have been fed over the past 10 years, plus State Department warnings), but the people were very welcoming and...

New Photographing California Guidebook

New Photographing California Guidebook Here's the preview copy I received over the weekend, with other books in the series by the same publisher.  Sign up on my blog to hear when hardcopies and ebooks are available, including author-signed copies: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/07/new-California-landscape-photography-guidebook.html Thanks to Lori Carey Phillip Colla Tom Grubbe Lori Hibbett Daniel Leifheit QT Luong Garry McCarthy John H. Moore Elena Northroup Steve Sieren Sairam Sundaresan for supplying photos for the book, and to J. Rae Chip for Salton Sea area guidance.  You're all mentioned in the book in the Acknowledgements section. I met many of the contributors in my travels and/or through photowalks.  This would have been a different, probably harder and less fun project without the camaraderie of meeting new and old friends along the way.  Both the photowalks I announced on G+, and G+ as a communication platform in general, facilitated that process, so I owe Google...
