Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Report, October 5

Image
Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Report, October 5 After seeing a TV news report "Peak Eastern Sierra fall colors, last chance!" referring to this location which frankly looks 80% green and 1-3 weeks from peak to me, I've started a group for crowdsourced reporting of current fall colors conditions in the Eastern Sierra: https://www.facebook.com/groups/easternsierrafallcolors/ Being a relatively high location for aspen in the area, Conway Summit can be a good indication of what's coming over the next couple of weeks. You can see in this photo from Thursday 11/5 one nice patch of yellow near the top. The rest has some lightening green with some nice burnt orange tips that developed after the September storms. It could be great by the end of next week. The rest of the area is similar: pockets of color when you search, but plenty of green trees in reserve for the next 1-3 weeks (barring storms and major wind events). I covered Mono County from June Lake Loop to Walker last week...

California Fall Colors

Image
Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Photography California Fall Colors After enjoying the Eastern Sierra for decades, pursuing fall colors here for over ten years and living here for six, my main fall colors workshop dates this year are: October 3 - 7 Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and Milky Way October 10 - 14 Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and Moonlit Landscapes http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/ November 12 - 16 Yosemite Fall Colors and Full Moon http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/yosemite-national-park-photography-workshops/ I read today that "In Wisconsin, the fall-color tourists spend over $1 billion". I can show you the best of California for a whole lot less! If there's demand I may add an Eastern Sierra workshop later in October, but there's added risk of a cold mid-October storm destroying the turned leaves and burning the remaining ones to brown and black. #fallcolors   #landscapephotography   #photogr...

Aspen With Snow (horizontal)

Aspen With Snow (horizontal) I uploaded to 500px a high resolution horizontal composition of the snowy aspen scene that I shared here to G+ a few days ago. #landscapephotography   #monocounty   #visitcalifornia   #fallcolors https://500px.com/photo/128674909/snowy-fall-aspen-by-jeff-sullivan?utm_medium=googleplus&utm_campaign=nativeshare&utm_content=web&utm_source=500px

Last Gasp of Fall

Last Gasp of Fall Although most of the aspen had lost most of their leaves when I passed through the Eastern Sierra last week, this stand down near Bishop still provided a nice streak of yellow.  #EasternSierra   #fallcolors   #landscapephotography   #california

Oxbow Bend Fall Reflection

Image
Oxbow Bend Fall Reflection I've included more photos from this day in a new blog post:  A Day in Grand Teton National Park http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/10/grand-teton-national-park-wyoming.html I'm posting a whole series of posts from this trip to my new blog: www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com I passed and shot this location in Grand Teton National Park several times on this visit, but this shot from roughly noon turned out best.  Clearly it's not just a sunrise or sunset spot! #landscapephotography #grandteton    #nationalpark    #fallcolors   #wyoming

Backlit Cottonwoods in the Mist

Image
Backlit Cottonwoods in the Mist Colorful cottonwood trees and morning mist at Topaz Lake, on the California-Nevada border.  Fall colors aren't over quite yet! I shot this through the living room window. I stepped outside for the next few shots but the mist wasn't quite as high by then. #fallcolors   #monocounty   #landscapephotography  Eastern Sierra Nevada Workshops  www.MyPhotoGuides.com

Snow in the Eastern Sierra Today

Image
Snow in the Eastern Sierra Today This image was captured this morning in the Eastern Sierra, looking across Topaz Lake at the Sweetwater Mountains in the northern end of Mono County.   The snow level looks to be around 7500-8000 feet, low enough to dust Bodie but it looks like we may have enough to shoot around here that I don't need to drive that far. #fallcolors   #landscapephotography   #monocounty   #easternsierra   www.MyPhotoGuides.com

Fall Colors in Nevada Last Weekend

Image
Fall Colors in Nevada Last Weekend It was great seeing Swee Oh Cynthia Pyun Mitchell Weinstock Tim Gupta Bob Bowman Larry Nienkark Sam Breach and others on our way out of town last weekend.  Lori Hibbett and I ended up doing an 1100-mile photography tour of Nevada, and like other trips through, we barely scratched the surface.  We'll take more trips through and around our home state, including some slower ones where we can  explore the the great sites we discovered in more detail. Prime Fall Colors in Mono County This Week

Image
Prime Fall Colors in Mono County This Week As of last night, the latest reports are saying that many locations survived this week's wind storms better expected, and although there are many many bare trees at higher elevations, there are also colorful ones and others which still have green and will continue to change over the next 1-2 weeks.   and I hope to get out to check current conditions further south in the county later today or tomorrow. Here in Antelope Valley at 5000 feet elevation in the northern end of Mono County, the cottonwood trees are just starting to turn, so the Walker/Coleville/Topaz area could be nice for those in 1-3 weeks.  (This shot of aspen trees was taken in Mono County last week October 9, before the winds.) Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Last Week

Image
Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Last Week We'll be back out this Friday... hopefully there will be some colorful leaves left after the winds over the last couple of days. Originally shared by Eastern Sierra Nevada Workshops Eastern Sierra Fall Colors , Week of October 5 - 10 A lot has changed here in the Eastern Sierra over the last few days due to 24 hours of high winds, but here's how it looked last week.  The Mono Basin probably had the greenest trees, most likely to survive the winds, including the areas around June Lake Loop, Lee Vining Creek and Mill Creek.
