Slot Canyon in Death Valley National Park

Image
Slot Canyon in Death Valley National Park I can't wait to return to Death Valley next month!  There were places where the wildflowers should be stunning this year.  This photo is from a preview trip I took last month with Lori Hibbett, Nicole Sullivan and Thomas Sullivan last month. #deathvalleynationalpark   #landscapephotography   #california   Death Valley Workshops

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney When I learned that the moon would be near Venus and Mars on February 20 I decided to try to catch them setting behind Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in America's Lower 48 states.  I researched where to stand to place them setting over the peak using The Photographer's Ephemeris, and headed to Lone Pine to test my prediction.  Here's how it turned out! https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction #science   #astronomy   #astrophotography   #timelapsevideo   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction

Daffodil Hill is Blooming Early This Year

Image
Daffodil Hill is Blooming Early This Year Daffodil Hill, near the town of Volcano, in California's Amador County, opened on Monday, February 23, two weeks earlier than it has opened in its 75 years. "Each spring, from mid-March through mid-April, Daffodil Hill explodes with thousands of blooms, attracting visitors from around the world. It is estimated that today, Daffodil Hill is carpeted with over 300,000 bulbs. Daffodil Hill is in a beautiful alpine setting at an elevation of over 3,000 feet. With pine trees, an old barn, wagon wheels, and rusting mining equipment and farming tools, it appeals to anyone with a love of nature. Flowers are everywhere, with pea-fowl, chickens, pigeons and lambs making themselves at home." http://www.amadorcountychamber.com/Daffodil%20Hill.htm More locations to check for wildflowers this year: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2008/02/23/spring-wildflowers-in-california/ #spring   #flowers   #California

California Wildflower Season Begins

Image
California Wildflower Season Begins After catching the moon, Mars and Venus setting behind Mount Whitney Friday night, Lori Hibbett and I continued south to Antelope Valley to check on the progress of the wildflowers, which will be blooming over the next 9 weeks.  Many areas still have weeks to go before peak bloom, but some warm, well-lit locations like this are blooming a little early.  This faces southeast, so the rocks reflect sunlight and radiate heat onto the patch of wildflowers below, bringing spring a little early. I can't wait to get back out to Death Valley and surrounding areas when much of the Mojave Desert is blooming!  Some folks are predicting the best bloom since the epic year of 2005, and in many places I've seen so far this year, I think that they're right. #springwildflowers   #californiaphotography   #mojavedesert   Eastern Sierra Nevada Workshops Death Valley Workshops Eastern Sierra Nevada Workshops  www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com Originally shared

Moon, Mars and Venus Conjunction over Mount Whitney

Image
Moon, Mars and Venus Conjunction over Mount Whitney I was evaluating places to capture the moon with Mars and Venus nearby last Friday, and Lori Hibbett suggested, "How about Mount Whitney?"  Mount Whitney is the highest peak in America's contiguous 48 states, and is has a nice, pointy summit.  I checked with The Photographer's Ephemeris, and sure enough, there were several positions we could shoot from and capture the  moon and planets setting.   Shooting the actual event was just as straightforward as expected based on the predictions.  As the moon and planets set in the first location closest to the mountain, we moved back to the next location and captured them setting again.  The sky was getting a little dark by the third location, roughly 2 hours after sunset, so it was time to head in for dinner at that point. #moon   #moonmarsvenus   #conjunction   #astronomy   #photography   #landscapephotography   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com

Bridalveil Fall Reflection

Image
Bridalveil Fall Reflection I'm having good luck re-processing some old Yosemite images from the 2002 - 2009 time frame, produced before some of the newer versions of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.  I'll leave many of the older images up for comparison, so I'm putting many of the newer ones on my Yosemite National Park Workshops page. #yosemitephotography   #landscapephotography   #california  Blog: www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Yosemite National Park Workshops Bridalveil Fall in Late Summer Bridalveil Creek is spring-fed, so it isn't as dependent on spring snowmelt as some of the other waterfalls in Yosemite Valley, but its flow can still get pretty meager in dry years. This is a re-edit of a photo I took in August 2007.  I produced this new version in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 and HDRsoft Photomatix 5 (HDR) software.   #yosemitenationalpark   #hdrphotography   #photographyworkshop   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com

Science Does Not Support GMO Safety

Science Does Not Support GMO Safety The industry-funded campaigns to block GMO labelling laws brilliantly labelled anyone who simply wanted to know what they are eating as "anti-science", but what does science actually have to say about GMOs? The vast majority of GMO products are modified to either be resistant to pesticide (Round-Up Ready) or they contain an insecticide.  Here's the FDA's list: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/fdcc/?set=Biocon Follow links from there, and here's the FDA's letter accepting corn able to survive increased soakings of glyphosate Round-up herbicide: "Based on the information Monsanto has presented to FDA, we have no further questions concerning food and feed derived from MON 87427 corn at this time. However, as you are aware, it is Monsanto’s continuing responsibility to ensure that foods marketed by the firm are safe..." http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodScienceResearch/Biotechnology/Submissions/ucm304083.htm So the FDA

"Aunty Em, Aunty Em!"

Image
"Aunty Em, Aunty Em!" Big winds in the Eastern Sierra today! I'm hoping for lenticular clouds tonight or tomorrow morning. The power is out at the moment, and things like lawn furniture are far downwind. I was getting pelted in the face with debris, so I put on ski goggles. I went and filmed from a dock, but it felt like it might catch the wind and launch me, so I came back in to scrape the debris out of my eyes. #weather #windy #easternsierra

Almost My Last Photo

Image
Almost My Last Photo I'm really lucky that it was not my last image.  The small viewpoint was full with a photography workshop, so I asked if I could take this quick shot in front of them, then head down the hill to a different spot.  I ran to get out of their view quickly, startling a huge male grizzly bear away from the service berry bush he had been feeding on.  Two things you never do to a grizzly are startle them or give them the impression that you're challenging them for their food!  I saw his massive dark form and heard him crashing off through the brush about 50-70 yards.  I froze.  I figured that I should let the bear know that I was a human, not a bear, so i called back to the photographers above that if I started screaming, I was getting mauled by a grizzly bear.  Later I learned that bears can interpret yelling as an aggressive act, as a challenge. I heard nothing, not a leaf rustling or a stick cracking, until the bear's head popped up from behind the bush, wh

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada Spring is a good time to visit Valley of Fire.  I used to pass through the park on my way to and from Southern Utah in the fall and spring, and in 2012 Lori Hibbett and I met a bunch of G+ photographers there in early April, but I think we'll try late March to revisit the area this year. This presentation was mostly auto-created by the Story function on G+.  To find your Stories, drop down your Home menu (blue icon towards the upper right of your G+ screen), select Photos,Drop down your Home menu (blue icon towards the upper right of your G+ screen), select Photos, then drop down the menu at the top, and the first item on the list is Stories.  Select that, and you'll see the Stories you have to choose from. to edit, then share. Basically The Story function looks at all of your G+/Picasa photos (and Blogger and Panoramio if the accounts are linked), and it identifies trips or events, and puts them in the format you see when you follow a link lik
