Battery Point Lighthouse Sunrise Moon Set One of my favorite shots on my Oregon Coast road trip ended up being on my way back, just into California at Crescent City. On National Geographic I explain why I went out of my way to be here, at this place and time. I used the app The Photographer's Ephemeris on my iPhone to test the concept of a sunrise moon set over the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City and it seemed to work well, so I set up shortly before sunrise to enjoy the anticipated moment as it unfolded. https://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/photos/12806549/ #landscapephotography #California #astrophotography

*Exploring the Dunes in Death Valley * On one particular trip to Death Valley I experienced stunning side-light on the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, California. This really drove home to the point that even the most common of iconic locations can have subtle lighting conditions that are very specific to astronomical conditions such as sun angle. Eastern Sierra Fall Colors Report, October 5 After seeing a TV news report "Peak Eastern Sierra fall colors, last chance!" referring to this location which frankly looks 80% green and 1-3 weeks from peak to me, I've started a group for crowdsourced reporting of current fall colors conditions in the Eastern Sierra: https://www.facebook.com/groups/easternsierrafallcolors/ Being a relatively high location for aspen in the area, Conway Summit can be a good indication of what's coming over the next couple of weeks. You can see in this photo from Thursday 11/5 one nice patch of yellow near the top. The rest has some lightening green with some nice burnt orange tips that developed after the September storms. It could be great by the end of next week. The rest of the area is similar: pockets of color when you search, but plenty of green trees in reserve for the next 1-3 weeks (barring storms and major wind events). I covered Mono County from June Lake Loop to Walker last week...

Death Valley Wildflowers 2017 I've photographed over two dozen wildflower species in Death Valley National Park so far this month. Last year's superbloom delivered a bumper crop of seeds, which multiplied the rodent population, and that has resulted in more sidewinder rattlesnakes than I've seen in the park before. Watch where you step!
