What will you post for Sunset Saturday? Try a Daily Photo Theme! Whether you're a photographer eager to share your latest images or a photography lover, Google+ has a growing list of daily themes to interact around. For example, one of today's theme is Sunset Saturday, so upload a sunset image, include the tag #SunsetSaturday in the text of your post, and use the Search Google+ box at the top of the Google+ page to find #SunsetSaturday in other people's posts and discover what other contributors have uploaded as well.. A list of several themes per day to choose from can be found here on Eric Leslie's blog: http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/ I'm heading out the door in a few minutes and will be out in the field for 2-3 days chasing colorful trees, so I'm going to cross the International Date Line and assume it's Saturday somewhere. Hopefully I'll find Internet service on Sunday to particiapte in "Selfless Sunday",

Hangouts from your iPhone!

Hangouts from your iPhone! I'd love to be able to provide a live update on Sierra Nevada fall colors, directly from a grove of aspen. As long as someone on a PC initiates the hangout, it looks like that's now possible! One of the new features added to Google+ is the ability to conduct hangouts from a mobile phone. Since I only have a cellular connection anyway, that capability built for a mobile phone will probably work better for me than trying to stuff a "fat pipe" app through a tiny cell phone connection. Apparently this feature is out already for Droid phones with front-facing cameras, and while announced as "soon" for iOS (iPhones). I just checked both the Apple Store to make sure I'm current and my iPhone for a list of features... my current v1.04.2326 on my iPhone does say I can join hangouts. So I can't start one, but as long as I can get cellular service, I can join to provide a live report! For more information on new features, read the com

One Way to Interact More on Google+

Image
One Way to Interact More on Google+ Many people have trouble getting started on Google+, but photographers and photography lovers at least have a growing list of daily themes to interact around. For example, one of today's theme is Floral Friday, so post a flower shot, include the tag #FloralFriday, and use the new search capability at the top of the Google+ page to find #FloralFriday to discover other contributors and their shots as well.. A list of several themes per day to choose from can be found here on +Eric Leslie's blog: http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/ Join me this weekend for "Selfless Sunday", where people can take the opportunity to present someone else's excellent work at least once a week. #FloralFriday

360 degree panoramas can be mapped into a projection which puts the information into one frame, creating the illusion of little "planets". Here's a great example by Matt Payne. Check out his work for more! (Update: I'll be on the road for the next couple of days, but hopefully I'll have Internet service on Sunday so this won't have to serve as an early #SelflessSunday post!) Originally shared by Matt Payne I wanted to turn this photo project into a poster, so I added some border and text.

For Fall Friday here's a shot of the Maroon Bells in Colorado. I'll be heading out tonight or tomorrow to pursue fall colors here in California's Sierra Nevada! To explain the daily theme concept, one of today's theme is Fall Friday, so you can post a Fall colors shot, include the tag #FallFriday, and use the new search capability to find #fallfriday to discover other contributors and their shots as well.. A list of several themes per day to choose from can be found here on Eric Leslie's blog: http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/ I'm trying to get a "Selfless Sunday" tradition off the ground, where people can take the opportunity to share someone else's fine work. #FallFriday #PlusPhotoExtract

For Long Exposure Thursday I'm going to offer a few hundred long exposures, all strung together into a timelapse video of the earth's rotation under the Milky Way! http://vimeo.com/24802819 Once you can shoot one long exposure of the Milky Way, you can shoot dozens in a row, then run those images through software which will use them as frames in a video. The Orionid meteor Shower is available for most of the month of October, so head on out with an intervalometer (interval timer), and shoot a few hundred frames so you can catch come meteors! The best time to catch meteors is after midnight when your rotate around to the leading side of the earth as it flies through space at 67,062 miles per hour (107,300 km/h) around the sun. May the Best Content Win!

May the Best Content Win! One of cool things about social networking is the possibility that anyone's quality content could rise to the top and get attention. So far Google+ has been difficult in that respect if you didn't have a bazillion circle contacts, get on all the right lists, or simply get lucky enough to have something featured by a top user (fortunately some of them are very generous about including others). Now there's a way any photographer may break through the inherent Google+ caste system. It's semi-automated, semi-manual at first, but eventually the TOP G+ Photographs should be both an interesting place to browse for fascinating images, and a way for your work to find a broader audience. If you're interested, follow the directions below, add your nominations TO HIS ORIGINAL POST HERE : https://plus.google.com/111873853137122484021/posts/X39aUxnBaQg and best of luck to you! Sharing Circles; the Easiest Way to Share Lists

Sharing Circles; the Easiest Way to Share Lists In the "old days," last week, recommended lists were all the rage, but they were difficult to manage. They were created offsite, and you had to add users one at a time. As of yesterday, that has all changed. Jarek Klimek started early on Google+ and grew a list of outstanding photographers, sorted by specialty. (It was a hard list to get on; I only was added in the most recent version.) Now with the circle share function you can do three things: 1) Easily add these photographers via the "Add circle" link., and 2) If you've added the intact list as a new circle, you can re-share it Caveat: you are not in your circles, so you won't be on the list when you send it out. 3) If you want, since you now have the circle, you can add to the list and create your own custom version. (Out of courtesy it would probably be good to disclose the nature of your changes and not market it as the exact same list.) For example

This is Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park selectively lit by the warm light of the the last few moments of the setting sun. This is not some sort of post-processing effect. This phenomenon occurs fairly rarely, under very specific conditions during the last 2 weeks of February as the vertical profile of El Capitan blocks light on one side of this waterfall. leaving the water brightly backlit. This is my contribution for #WaterfallWednesday. I also moved some interesting waterfall pics to the front of this album of images from my blog posts. Album: ActiveSole | myphotoguides As I mentioned earlier, thanks to +Eric Leslie for of tracking some of these photo theme ideas! #PlusPhotoExtract

Although I primarily share images from my landscape photography, but in the Winter I also like to catch action shots of people playing in the snow-covered landscape. This is my friend Kevin Wherritt at the Alpine Meadows resort. In big news announced yesterday for Northern California skiers and snowboarders, the Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley resorts will offer an interchangeable pass this year: http://www.skialpine.com/ski-tickets/season-passes/squaw-valley I'd love to work with other photographers who might want to pursue shots like these, as that might help us schedule several athletes as models for shoots.

Daily Photo Themes on Google+

Daily Photo Themes on Google+ Have you been seeing tags like #waterfallWednesday turn up with photographs, and wondered what they're referring to? To answer that question, Eric Leslie has collected a nice list of some of the informal photography themes popping up from day to day on Google+: http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/ Thanks Eric! http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/
