Fourth Lake Reflection There's a basin with about a dozen lakes in it up Big Pine Creek.  About halfway through someone apparently got tired of naming them, so this is Fourth Lake.  The pines here aren't particularly big, but the creek was probably named for tall Ponderosa pines downstream. Moon, Mars, Venus Setting Over Mount Whitney Here's another photo of the Moon - Mars- Venus conjunction setting over Mt Whitney in "blue hour" twilight light a couple of weeks ago.  Astronomer Philip Plait has a nice write-up on the event his Bad Astronomy blog on Slate, which features the time-lapse video I created:  http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2015/03/08/moon_mars_venus_sunset_appulse_video.html The moon was actually in a thin crescent phase, but being positioned towards the sun, as seen from the moon the sun was illuminating a nearly "full earth", which provided a lot of "earth shine" to illuminate the portion of the moon's face not directly lit by the sun.  It's a pretty cool phenomenon to see, best seen a couple of days before or after the new moon, when the moon is close to the horizon in morning or evening twilight.   I anticipated this alignment with Mount Whitney using The Photographer's Ephemeris , as I did a moon ris

iPhone Bokeh Sometimes I pull out my cell phone to capture a shot, either to take advantage of the depth of field, to capture a simple panorama with no extra steps, to use a fish eye or macro lens in my pocket, or simply to record a place, thing or moment conveniently without having to get out a DSLR.   My iPhone 5S has been close to full for months now, so I can either clear out many of the images and videos, or I can (delete them all and) trade up to an iPhone 6+.  I've been very impressed with the photos I've taken on Lori Hibbett 's 6+, but I'm close enough now though to whatever might come out from Apple in the Fall, either a 6S or 7, that the other possibility is waiting for something even better.    #bokeh   #iphoneography   #iphone5s   #landscapephotography

An iPhone Visits a Ghost Town It sounds like the setup for a joke, but the punch line is... as a camera it did pretty well!  The park hasn't touched most of the interiors in decades, and they don't want anyone even disturbing the dust.  So having a light "camera" that is easy to maneuver can be particularly handy for low angle perspectives and hard-to-reach places where a big camera would be awkward. First Light on the Dry Lake I arrived before dawn to catch the best light in this location.  There are dry lake beds all over Southern California, and most of them offer interesting textures like this. Horsetail Fall, Yosemite National Park A number of conditions have to be just right for Horsetail Fall to flow at all, but you also need clear skies to the west for it to also be backlit by the setting sun.  It can take photographers years of trying before they arrive in Yosemite National Park before all of the right conditions occur. #yosemitenationalpark   #landscapephotography  Yosemite National Park Workshops  www.MyPhotoGuides.com

I identified three roads where we could catch the moon setting behind Mount Whitney at three different times, and this first location ended up being the best.
