Venus, Jupiter and the Moon Will Line Up in the Evening Sky Tonight

Venus, Jupiter and the Moon Will Line Up in the Evening Sky Tonight Then form a triangle in the sky tomorrow night, and come particularly close together on June 30: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/06/moon-venus-jupiter-will-line-up-tonight.html #astrophotography   #astronomy   #science   Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Jupiter, Venus, Moon Alignment from Sentinel Bridge Yosemite Valley isn't the greatest place to see expansive views of the night sky, but I was fortunate to arrive at Sentinel Bridge over the Merced River right before the moon set behind the valley rim. I was able to capture this frame with the moon and Venus reflected. https://picasaweb.google.com/107459220492917008623/NightPhotos#5713945726383135874 #astrophotography #starrynights

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney When I learned that the moon would be near Venus and Mars on February 20 I decided to try to catch them setting behind Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in America's Lower 48 states.  I researched where to stand to place them setting over the peak using The Photographer's Ephemeris, and headed to Lone Pine to test my prediction.  Here's how it turned out! https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction #science   #astronomy   #astrophotography   #timelapsevideo   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction

Comet Photography Lens Tests

Comet Photography Lens Tests As the Rosetta comet landing approaches this morning, here's a collection of time-lapse videos I've taken of comets in the past year, testing different lenses, camera and mounting methods (fixed and star tracking).  There were all fairly faint comets, not visible to the naked eye, requiring binoculars or a telephoto lens to locate.  (One of the first sequences I labelled as being taken on a tracking mount was accidentally mislabeled, it should be fairly obvious once you see the following clips.)   http://youtu.be/B-PCqS1KAT8?list=PLlLN6Bdq3jrl9OItgxV25czS-F1N1OLr7 #astrophotography   #nightphotography   #cometphotography   Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Photographing Comets Comet Siding Spring will approach Mars tonight and pass the red planet tomorrow, Sunday October 19, 2014. I performed many lens and exposure tests on Comet Lovejoy in late 2013 and early 2014, with and without a star-tracking mount. Here are some of the results, rendered as ...

Thanks to the Royal Observatory Greenwich for including my image in your video about the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2104 competition!  I'm always honored to have my work recognized by the Royal Observatory in London, home of Greenwich Mean time (GMT) and the Prime Meridian... the place that every longitude, every GPS coordinate on the planet, is defined relative to! Venus and Jupiter Conjunction Today

Venus and Jupiter Conjunction Today The planets Venus and Jupiter put on a show in the sky this morning as sunrise approached.  As seen from earth, these two bright planets appeared to pass within 0.3 degrees of each other in the sky.  For a closer shot I used a crop sensor camera to get a little more effective zoom out of my lenses, and at 640mm equivalent focal length I was able to resolve four of Jupiter's moons! I uploaded the wider shot to Flickr, and placed it in the Universe Today group, and moments later Universe Today had already blogged it.  Thanks Nancy Atkinson!   More photos:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2014/08/venus-saturn-conjunction-at-dawn-today.html #astronomy   #science   #news   #astrophotography

Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks in 10 Days! It gets stronger every night as the peak approaches; look to the northeast.  The moon sets just after midnight tonight if you want to check its activity tonight under optimal viewing conditions.  Here's a time-lapse video I made from several nights shooting the Perseid meteor shower last year:  http://youtu.be/vTXA5gYWtXs?list=PL6012D9822C1BA1E7 #Perseid   #perseidmeteorshower  #2014 www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Perseid Meteor Shower Composite, 2013 I'm still working on my images from the Camelopardalid meteor shower last night.  So in the meantime to kill some time while last night's images process, I produced this composite image showing 40 meteors from 4 hours of the Perseid meteor shower early in the morning of August 12, 2013. Milky Way and the Camelopardalid Meteor Shower

Milky Way and the Camelopardalid Meteor Shower My third time-lapse created from material captured in the last half of May:  http://youtu.be/rp-Cz1aVTtY I took over 1500 photos on Canon 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II and 70D cameras shooting North, West and panning to follow the Milky Way SE to SW.  I caught a lot of planes and satellites, and one small meteor in the north-facing clip which has approximately the right trajectory to plausibly be a Camelopardalid meteor. Thanks in advance for comments, +1s, shares! #nightphotography   #astrophotography   #astronomy   http://youtu.be/rp-Cz1aVTtY

Total Lunar Eclipse Tomorrow Night April 14-15, 2014

Total Lunar Eclipse Tomorrow Night April 14-15, 2014 Depending upon where you live on the planet, a lunar eclipse will occur starting either late April 14 or in the early morning hours of April 15.   Most of these shots were captured during the lunar eclipse December 21, 2010.  I used a Canon 5D Mark II with EF 16-35mm f/2.8 lens on the wide angle shots to capture a time-lapse movie, and I used my old 10 megapixel Canon 40D with 70-200mm lens and 2X teleconverter to pursue telephoto shots and track exposure changes.   Here are some ideas on shots you can pursue during a lunar eclipse:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/12/lunar-eclipse-photography-dec-10-2011.html Using a planning tool such as PhotoPills ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photopills/id596026805?mt=8&uo=4&at=10ldnC ) you can even line the moon up with natural or man-made landmarks, like I did during the lunar eclipse on December 10, 2011 in San Francisco: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/12/chasing-moon-luna...
