Twilight Light Painting

Image
Twilight Light Painting In addition to the headlights and a light in the interior, I used the fading twilight light coming over the horizon to the left for fill and back light, and used a cool (blue-white LED) flashlight as the main key light to the right. In portrait photography it's common to think of the key light as front-lighting the subject, but I didn't want too much light on the grill, to preserve the contract of the headlights vs. the dark front, and the overall mood of a slightly enlivened hulk of a car. With roughly a quarter of a million visitors to Bodie each year, some say that this 1937 Chevy is the most photographed car in the world. I have plenty of photos of it myself, but I like to try different photographic treatments.to explore what more can be done with it. As storms start to drop snow at Bodie's 8375 foot elevation we're done with our 2015 workshops there, but we should have dates for next summer in early 2016: http://www.jeffsullivanphotograph

Back Up Your Phone Photos!

Back Up Your Phone Photos! I hate to think what could have happened if a phone failed after 2000 miles, if I hadn't been backing them up the whole way! Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Campsite Photo Backup and Recharge I carry external batteries like this to charge phones and other USB devices wherever I am. To protect my PC data, I back up my hard drives (having lost 7 hard drives in recent years). For my vehicle I carry a roadside assistance plan to get my vehicle towed when it breaks down. But what if your phone fails? The most common cause of failure is dropping it in water, which I've done. I'd rather upgrade to the latest model than carry an insurance plan on the phone itself, but when traveling I don't stop to sync the data enough, or even just back up photos, so how can you avoid losing data? On my September road trip, SanDisk offered me their new Wireless Memory Stick to use with my 2 phones: the old iPhone 5S I still had on a 2-year contract and an LG G4 th

Final Leg Home, Without My SUV!

Final Leg Home, Without My SUV! Not long before this 3000-mile trip I had just bought new tires, completed some repairs and had the oil changed, but you just never know what's going to happen on the road.  Here's how the story ends, as I head home in a rental minvan: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2015/10/22/final-leg-home-without-my-suv/ I'm posting the story of this trip in installments, in reverse order, so that once they are all posted on my blog, they can be read straight through in chronological order to the end, no matter what section new readers may arrive in.   Here's the new post describing the prior day, leaving Grand Teton and the loss of my SUV: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/?p=90322 www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com/blog #roadtrip   #travel   #photography   #blogger

I've read that Twitter may hone its strength and focus on breaking news.  It's not always the best place for general posts, but my tweet this morning on the Orionid meteor shower sure seems to be catching fire! https://twitter.com/JeffSullPhoto/status/657188912671014912

Milky Way Over Bodie Church

Image
Milky Way Over Bodie Church I'm always looking for new angles on my favorite subjects in the Wild West town of Bodie. This mid-October position for the Milky Way is about as far west as it was going to get, so our workshops in Bodie last week seemed like a perfect time to pursue this reverse angle composition. Fall Colors on Conway Summit

Image
Fall Colors on Conway Summit This was from Monday on Conway Summit on Highway 395 in the Eastern Sierra. It's raining hard at Topaz Lake at the moment, partly cloudy on the Webcam at Mono Lake. It'll be interesting to see what's left of the fall colors in the Eastern Sierra after scattered storms this weekend. Aspen and cottonwood trees with green leaves should turn over the next 1-2 weeks, moving down in elevation into November. www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com ‪#‎fall‪#‎fallcolors‬ ‪#‎easternsierra‬ ‪#‎monocounty‬ ‪#‎Canon‬ ‪#‎CanonFanPhoto‬ #DiscoverAmerrica ‪#‎California‬ ‪#landscapephotography

Golden Trout Wilderness Sunrise Reflection

Image
Golden Trout Wilderness Sunrise Reflection This was captured at dawn at Muir Lake in the Golden Trout Wilderness in the Southern Sierra. The most intense summer storm on record for Southern California was on its way that night, and the clouds in advance of it provided a great light show as the first light of the rising sun struck the surrounding peaks. This was a 6+ mile hike from the Horseshoe Meadows trailhead, mostly around 10,000 feet in elevation. The rain started before sunset, and didn't let up until 11am the following day. With water soaking in through the tent floor and more rain or snow in the forecast, it was time to get out ASAP before the next wave of the deluge struck! (And yes, I did catch several golden trout before the storm arrived!) www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com #landscapephotography #SierraNevada Ebackpacking #EasternSierra

Milky Way over Walker Fire by Bodie Church I can't wait for our night photography workshops coming up this Sunday/Monday October 11 and 12!  This is about where the Milky Way will be when it gets fully dark.  Assuming that the park continues the workshop program next year, we probably won't have any more dates in Bodie until May or June 2016.  I'm glad that we have two nights this month, because I don't want to wait that long! #nightphotography   #photographyworkshop   #easternsierra
