Bodie's 193 earthquakes over 1.5 Magnitude

Image
Bodie's 193 earthquakes over 1.5 Magnitude The shaking in Bodie continues! When I search the USGS site for earthquakes 1.5 and over, it shows 193 in the past week. Apparently some windows have broken, some brick buildings have been damaged, so the park has been closed through Sunday so the damage can be assessed and buildings stabilized. The activity could last two months, so there is the possibility of strong aftershocks as well. For photos of the historic town of Bodie, see my album with over 400: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysullivan/albums/72157630926160354 Photo usage permission may be granted with appropriate credit, so contact me with any requests. #earthquakes   #Hawthorne   #Nevada   #science   #news

Perseid Meteor Shower 2015

Image
Perseid Meteor Shower 2015 This is a composite showing a few of the meteors I found in a southwest-facing sequence of images covering over 3 hours in the Mojave Desert. It takes a while to separate out the individual meteors, so I'll come back to the rest of them as time permits.   #science   #astronomy   #perseids   #meteorshower  #2015 www.MyPhotoGuides.com

Summer Milky Way

Image
Summer Milky Way For the most part, the Milky Way is likely to be too high overhead to capture more of these types of Milky Way panorama shots this year, but I'm looking forward to next year!   On the other hand, during our Bodie workshops on August 15, October 11, and 12, although the Milky Way will intersect with the horizon in a fairly vertical fashion, on August 15 the bright galactic center doesn't set until after we leave the park at 1 am.   On October 11 and 12, we should have a good couple of hours of shooting the Milky Way before the galactic center sets.  With the earlier fall sunsets before 6:30, we'll have a lot of additional hours for light painting and star trails as well.  In the past I mainly looked at photos from past years to estimate Milky Way times, but I'm testing an app which represents the orientation of the Milky Way over a map, so photographers can plan their night shoots, noting the rise and set time of the galactic center.  I'll try to get...

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010-2012

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010-2012 The annual Perseid meteor shower is considered to be active from July 13th to August 26th, peaking around the night of August 12-13.  The weather and moon phase don't always cooperate to offer great viewing conditions, so it can take time to accumulate enough photos to put together a long time-lapse video.   In 2014 I assembled time-lapse clips from the previous recent years to set to this song "While the Sun Was Sleeping" by Life Audience. #perseid   #meteorshower   #astronomy   #science   #astrophotography   #nightphotography   #timelapse   www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan 2014 Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight! In honor of the 2014 Perseid Meteor shower peaking tonight, I offer you time-lapse clips from the 2010-2012 Perseids in the first 1:49 of this video.  All of the footage in it was compiled during my travels in recent years.  I hope that you enjoy it! Catch the 10% Crescent Moon Setting Tonight

Catch the 10% Crescent Moon Setting Tonight Astronomers are looking forward to the end of this month when Venus will appear in the sky very close to Jupiter.  But the two bright planets will be dancing with the crescent moon for the next three nights.  Tonight in mid northern latitudes the crescent moon of about 9% full will be best caught to the west during twilight around 9 pm, right before it descends into the thicker air and haze by the horizon. For the following two nights, the moon will be brighter and set increasingly later, forming a triangle with Jupiter and Venus. I photographed a similar event earlier this year, when the moon set with Venus and Mars nearby.  I posted a time-lapse video and photographs of that event to my blog:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/03/venus-mars-moon-conjunction.html #science   #astronomy   #photography   #astrophotography   www.MyPhotoGuides.com

Howling at the Moon

Howling at the Moon Chasing the full moon and lunar eclipse across three locations from sunset to sunrise.  I was pleasantly surprised to discover the blue planet Uranus next to the red, eclipsed moon in my telephoto shots:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/06/lunar-eclipse-photography-october-2014.html The Huffington Post UK published one of my photos from this night, the composite image that I entered into the 2015 Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest, so I decided to show some of the other photos from the night as well. Moon, Mars, Venus Setting Over Mount Whitney

Image
Moon, Mars, Venus Setting Over Mount Whitney Here's another photo of the Moon - Mars- Venus conjunction setting over Mt Whitney in "blue hour" twilight light a couple of weeks ago.  Astronomer Philip Plait has a nice write-up on the event his Bad Astronomy blog on Slate, which features the time-lapse video I created:  http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2015/03/08/moon_mars_venus_sunset_appulse_video.html The moon was actually in a thin crescent phase, but being positioned towards the sun, as seen from the moon the sun was illuminating a nearly "full earth", which provided a lot of "earth shine" to illuminate the portion of the moon's face not directly lit by the sun.  It's a pretty cool phenomenon to see, best seen a couple of days before or after the new moon, when the moon is close to the horizon in morning or evening twilight.   I anticipated this alignment with Mount Whitney using The Photographer's Ephemeris , as I did a moon ris...

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney

Moon, Mars, Venus Conjunction Over Mount Whitney When I learned that the moon would be near Venus and Mars on February 20 I decided to try to catch them setting behind Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in America's Lower 48 states.  I researched where to stand to place them setting over the peak using The Photographer's Ephemeris, and headed to Lone Pine to test my prediction.  Here's how it turned out! https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction #science   #astronomy   #astrophotography   #timelapsevideo   www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com https://vimeo.com/jeffsullivan/moon-mars-venus-conjunction

Science Does Not Support GMO Safety

Science Does Not Support GMO Safety The industry-funded campaigns to block GMO labelling laws brilliantly labelled anyone who simply wanted to know what they are eating as "anti-science", but what does science actually have to say about GMOs? The vast majority of GMO products are modified to either be resistant to pesticide (Round-Up Ready) or they contain an insecticide.  Here's the FDA's list: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/fdcc/?set=Biocon Follow links from there, and here's the FDA's letter accepting corn able to survive increased soakings of glyphosate Round-up herbicide: "Based on the information Monsanto has presented to FDA, we have no further questions concerning food and feed derived from MON 87427 corn at this time. However, as you are aware, it is Monsanto’s continuing responsibility to ensure that foods marketed by the firm are safe..." http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodScienceResearch/Biotechnology/Submissions/ucm304083.htm So the FDA ...

Massive Asteroid BL86 Approaches Earth

Image
Massive Asteroid BL86 Approaches Earth Here's a composite photo to go with the time-lapse video I posted this morning of mountain-sized Asteroid 2004 BL46 (357439) as it approached earth last night.  Fortunately this pass was a near-miss, coming no closer than 3X the distance to the moon.  That's still very close in terms of the vastness of space, and it'll be interesting to see how close it comes on its next lap 8000 years from now. This still image was assembled from the first 60 images I captured, the video clips from 119 separate images of the sky.  Click on my name to see all of my posts to see my post this morning with the video.  I also posted photos and video of Comet Lovejoy in recent days. The sequences of photos of the asteroid last night were taken with a full frame DSLR and 70-200 mm lens, on a star-tracking mount. The evening sky is becoming bright with the moonlight, so I lowered the they ISO sensitivity to 2000. I tried a second camera using an 85mm lens at ...
