Torrential rains came to town at 3 pm, just as many workshop participants were leaving town to join us for a pre-workshop dinner at Virginia Creek Settlement. The rain cleared the air of smoke from California's wildfires, then the clouds added to the drama in the sky through golden hour and into sunset, but as often happens, quickly broke up for night photography. It was perfect photography workshop weather! Our remaining Bodie workshops in 2016 are getting pretty full, so I'm looking into potentially adding a date in October. Let me know if you want to hear about 2017 dates once I have them. Clouds Over Bodie at Dawn It's pretty dry here in the Eastern Sierra, and most of the clouds we get in the summer tend to be from convection currents in the afternoon, clearing as the sun sets and the heat of the day fades.  So it's a rare treat to have a nice sunrise in the summer. Blast from the G+ Past This album was created on G+ by Google, from photos included in my Blogger blog posts from 2006 through 2011.  When I posted this album on August 29, 2011 I had 3403 contacts and the post received 90 +1s and over 30 shares.  G+ was truly a vibrant community then.  Yesterday with over 2,000,000 contacts, ranked #52 on G+ among individuals in the U.S. by CircleCount ( http://www.circlecount.com/p/+JeffreySullivan? ), most active post had 42 +1s and no post had more than 1 share.   Yesterday on Facebook, Robert Scoble said, "When I speak around the world I ask people what social networks they use. Nearly no one is on Google+. Google finally is realizing they lost.  I don't see good things ahead for Google+." Having invested a chunk of my life to the community, to the platform, I hope that Yonatan Zunger and the Google engineering teams can resurrect G+, but I don't think that the core strategic problems or resolutions lie with YouTube or other Goog...

A Day in a Wild West Mining Town The California Gold Rush was started by the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848.  In 1959 W. S. Bodey discovered gold east of the Sierra Nevada, and the rest is history.  Fortunately we can explore that history due to local families preserving the town until it became Bodie State Historic Park in 1962.  The town is preserved in a state of "arrested decay", and the interiors of the buildings have been left largely untouched for over 50 years.   We head out there from before dawn, and spend a long day with sunrise, sunset, two golden hours, six hours of access to interiors, and from the time the park closes at 6 pm into the night at 1 am.  It's a marathon, but one full of unique photographic opportunities.   I've created a new blog post outlining a typical schedule: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-photo-workshop-day-and-night-in-bodie.html #ghosttown   #abandonedplaces   #photographyworkshops   Bodie Photo Works...
