Watch the Moon Rise at Sunset Tonight, October 4, 2017

Watch the Moon Rise at Sunset Tonight, October 4, 2017 See and photograph the nearly-full moon rising at sunset tonight. Then tomorrow before dawn, Venus and Mars will be within 1/4 degree of each other. Solar Eclipse Road Trip, Here We Come!

Image
Solar Eclipse Road Trip, Here We Come! I can't wait to get on the road to shoot the Great American Eclipse! Crowds are expected to be record-breaking along the path of the solar eclipse coming up August 21. Many areas are trying to implement customer traffic control plans in the narrow path of the moon's shadow. I hear that even porta-potty rentals are in short supply as communities try to cope with the expected crowds. Fortunately I'll be bringing my own facilities with me! Thank you Capital Ford for getting the Ford Motor Company-remanufactured engine in ASAP so we can stake our claim to a great shooting location! I'm working on my landscape photography and night photography workshop schedule for 2018. Drop by my Web site in the coming weeks to see the schedule as it develops! www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com Blog post: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2017/08/01/solar-eclipse-road-trip-here-we-come/ #solareclipse #greatamericaneclipse #astrophotography #...

Moon, Jupiter and Venus Conjunction at Mono Lake

Image
Moon, Jupiter and Venus Conjunction at Mono Lake One of my photos from this moon and planet rise event has been published as the lead photo in an article in the August 2017 SkyandTelescope Magazine by Don Olson, page 68. A description of Don's work to decipher a poem by Lord Byron appears on the Texas State University Web site, along with a copy of the photo: 'Celestial Sleuth' identifies Lord Byron's stellar inspiration http://www.txstate.edu/news/news_releases/news_archive/2017/June-2017/Olson062617.html Here's their description of the photo: "On August 23, 2014, astrophotographer Jeff Sullivan observed the Moon with Jupiter nearby in a morning twilight sky. Glitter paths below three celestial bodies reflect in the waters of California’s Mono Lake in this morning twilight scene captured by astrophotographer Jeff Sullivan. Venus, at lower left, has just risen above the distant hills. Jupiter, with its Galilean satellites visible, stands higher in the sky, ...

Total Lunar Eclipse September 27, 2015

Total Lunar Eclipse September 27, 2015 The partly cloudy forecast and webcam images didn't look all that promising in the Eastern Sierra yesterday afternoon, so I ditched my plans to pursue one of several compositions that I had worked out, and I stayed home to see if the moon would make any appearance at all.  Here's the story and some of my results from the event: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/09/total-lunar-eclipse-september-27-2015.html #lunareclipse   #bloodmoon   #september  #2015 #astronomy   #astrophotography   #nightphotography

See the "supermoon" total eclipse tonight!

See the "supermoon" total eclipse tonight! For sky watchers in the Rocky Mountain states, partial eclipse begins at 7:11 pm local time, so look outside now!  For those of us on the West Coast of North America, moon rise occurs closer to sunset, in a little over 30 minutes.  Here in the Eastern Sierra, local moon rise is around 6:44 pm and sunset is around 6:47 pm. The moon will clear the horizon to the east right around sunset, well into its partial eclipse phase, and be fully eclipsed from 7:11 - 8:23 pm. Perseid Meteor Shower 2015

Perseid Meteor Shower 2015 This is a composite showing a few of the meteors I found in a southwest-facing sequence of images covering over 3 hours in the Mojave Desert. Summer Milky Way

Image
Summer Milky Way For the most part, the Milky Way is likely to be too high overhead to capture more of these types of Milky Way panorama shots this year, but I'm looking forward to next year!   On the other hand, during our Bodie workshops on August 15, October 11, and 12, although the Milky Way will intersect with the horizon in a fairly vertical fashion, on August 15 the bright galactic center doesn't set until after we leave the park at 1 am.   On October 11 and 12, we should have a good couple of hours of shooting the Milky Way before the galactic center sets.  With the earlier fall sunsets before 6:30, we'll have a lot of additional hours for light painting and star trails as well.  In the past I mainly looked at photos from past years to estimate Milky Way times, but I'm testing an app which represents the orientation of the Milky Way over a map, so photographers can plan their night shoots, noting the rise and set time of the galactic center.  I'll try to get...

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010-2012

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010-2012 The annual Perseid meteor shower is considered to be active from July 13th to August 26th, peaking around the night of August 12-13.  The weather and moon phase don't always cooperate to offer great viewing conditions, so it can take time to accumulate enough photos to put together a long time-lapse video.   In 2014 I assembled time-lapse clips from the previous recent years to set to this song "While the Sun Was Sleeping" by Life Audience. #perseid   #meteorshower   #astronomy   #science   #astrophotography   #nightphotography   #timelapse   www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan 2014 Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight! Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Coming Aug 11-14

Image
Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Coming Aug 11-14 As I mentioned with my time-lapse video share yesterday, the earth passes through the comet debris that causes the Perseid meteor shower for a few weeks, but the activity peaks around the night of August 12-13.  The meteor activity is high for a while on either side of the peak so it can be productive to look in the August 11-14 timeframe. #astronomy   #astrophotography   #Perseid   #meteorshower   www.MyPhotoGuides.com Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Perseid Meteor Shower Composite, 2013 I'm still working on my images from the Camelopardalid meteor shower last night.  So in the meantime to kill some time while last night's images process, I produced this composite image showing 40 meteors from 4 hours of the Perseid meteor shower early in the morning of August 12, 2013. These meteors appear in my time-lapse video of the 2013 Perseid Meteor shower on YouTube: Perseid Meteor Shower 2013 Here's the rest of my Astrophotography ...
