The Advantages of Winter Light

Image
The Advantages of Winter Light A while back I noticed that some photos I took of sand dunes in Death Valley looked particularly good. I suspected that it was the compass direction of the sun: it was shining at an angle close to the orientation of parallel ridges, so undulations in the dunes were showing some nice highlights and shadows. I tested the concept on following trips when the sun was at a similar compass angle, and that didn't seem to fully explain what was great about the original light and images. Recently I was calculating what size and placement of overhang would be necessary to provide passive solar energy: to shade a window in the summer, while allowing sunlight to stream in and heat the house in the winter. The results explained a lot. In the summer here at about 38 degrees latitude the sun gets about 76 degrees high. In December close to the winter solstice, it only gets 30 degrees high. I live in the Eastern Sierra, and the sun elevation is within a degree in the ...

After Google+

Image
After Google+ I'm so sorry to see Google+ closing down in early April instead of August. I don't know how often I'll get back here in the next few weeks. It's been great interacting with you all over the last few years, and I hope to see you all on the other social media platforms and image sharing services that we use. Milky Way Season is On!

Image
Milky Way Season is On! ...If you don't mind getting up in the middle of the night! Fortunately the Milky Way rise time moves earlier in the night each month, until it gets downright reasonable and is in the sky after evening twilight for my night photography workshops from June through October. #milkyway #nightphotography #landscapephotography #photographyworkshops Www.jeffsullivanphotography.com

Death Valley Wildflowers 2017

Image
Death Valley Wildflowers 2017 I've photographed over two dozen wildflower species in Death Valley National Park so far this month. Last year's superbloom delivered a bumper crop of seeds, which multiplied the rodent population, and that has resulted in more sidewinder rattlesnakes than I've seen in the park before. Watch where you step! I followed a couple of the tracks, but was not able to catch up with any of the snakes. www.jeffsullivanphotography.com #deathvalley #nationalpark #landscapephotography #California #photographyworkshops

Blue Hour at Mono Lake

Image
Blue Hour at Mono Lake After the "super moon" rise at Mono Lake last month, I stayed to get a blue hour photo of these tufa rock formations, back-lit by the light of the full moon. I entered this and several other photos in the annual calendar contest conducted by the Mono Lake Committee... fingers crossed!  www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com #landscapephotography #photographyworkshops #monolake #california #easternsierrs

Sunset at Mono Lake Friday Night

My New Page on Google+

My New Page on Google+ I've started a new page on G+, where I'll be making most of my new posts first, so you may want to follow my page and collections there: Jeff Sullivan Photography  Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Photography Mono Lake / Eastern Sierra Workshop Last Week As I did most of the summer, I held an Eastern Sierra workshop adjacent to my Bodie workshop last weekend, so people could see more of the area and get some practice with night photography before getting to Bodie on Sunday. Summer evenings are often windy, but that doesn't mean that you can't get good sunset shots! We actually spent some time up in the Tioga Pass area as well, enjoying afternoon cumulous clouds, sunset, and night photography. I'll have a couple of fall workshops in early October when we can revisit those areas: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/eastern-sierra-fall-colors-photo-workshops/ #easternsierra #landscapephotography #photographyworkshops #monolake...

Stormy Day in Bodie

Image
Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Photography Stormy Day in Bodie At lest a couple of dozen photos from the July 29 night photography workshop are included in the Bodie Photography Workshops album. Torrential rains came to town at 3 pm, just as many workshop participants were leaving town to join us for a pre-workshop dinner at Virginia Creek Settlement. The rain cleared the air of smoke from California's wildfires, then the clouds added to the drama in the sky through golden hour and into sunset, but as often happens, quickly broke up for night photography. It was perfect photography workshop weather! Our remaining Bodie workshops in 2016 are getting pretty full, so I'm looking into potentially adding a date in October. Let me know if you want to hear about 2017 dates once I have them. The most popular dates do fill quickly these days. http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/ #nightphotography   #photographyworkshops   #easternsier...

Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows Sunday Night

Image
Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows Sunday Night I headed up to the Tioga Pass Road in Yosemite to see how current summer water levels in the Tuolumne River might influence my workshop later this week. With water levels dropping, there are some nice calm spots for sunset reflections. 2016 Yosemite Schedule: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/yosemite-national-park-photography-workshops/ #Yosemite   #landscapephotography   #photographyworkshops
