Tenaya Lake at Night

Tenaya Lake at Night Several members of our recent workshop capture the Milky Way over Tenaya Lake.  Lori Hibbett had just injured her knee that morning, so she didn't come down to the shore with us for this shot.

Most Super Moon of the Year Coming This Weekend

Most Super Moon of the Year Coming This Weekend "We astronomers call this sort of close full moon a perigee full moon. The word perigee describes the moon’s closest point to Earth for a given month. Two years ago, when the closest and largest full moon fell on March 19, 2011, many used the term supermoon, which we’d never heard before. Last year, we heard this term again to describe the year’s closest full moon on May 6, 2012. Now the term supermoon is being used a lot. Last month’s full moon – May 24-25, 2013 – was also a supermoon. But the June full moon is even more super! In other words, the time of full moon falls even closer to the time of perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth. The crest of the moon’s full phase in June 2013, and perigee, fall within an hour of each other." Still building an Emerging Photographers on G+" Circle...

Still building an Emerging Photographers on G+" Circle... Do you know someone I should add?  It started with photographers in Euro Maestro's Cream of the Crop circle, but I've grown it to include more photographers on G+ who deserve a little more love form the community.  They're not all super-active yet, but it's the time-old "chicken and egg" problem... they'd probably become more active once they see more interaction with the community on G+.  So whether they're brand new to G+ or simply relatively undiscovered, let's welcome them to the G+ photographer community!   Add your photographer nominations in the comments below, thanks.

Possible Gamma Delphinid Meteor Shower Tonight

Possible Gamma Delphinid Meteor Shower Tonight "Forecasters Peter Jenniskens (SETI Institute) and Esko Lyytinen (Helsinki, Finland) predict the return of the Gamma Delphinid meteor shower at around 0830 UT (04:30 am EDT) on June 11, 2013. The shower is expected to last no more than about 30 minutes to an hour, producing an unknown number of bright, fast meteors. A dark location will be best for observing the shower." http://earthsky.org/space/meteor-alert-possible-meteor-outburst-tuesday-morning http://earthsky.org/space/meteor-alert-possible-meteor-outburst-tuesday-morning?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+fullsite+(EarthSky)

Interior Shots from Bodie State Historic Park

Image
Interior Shots from Bodie State Historic Park From the October 7 workshop last Fall.  We'll be accessing the inside of buildings at Bodie on October 13 this year. Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Morning Coffee, Inside Boone General Store This is an old coffee grinder in the Boone General Store.  We were able to enter the buildings as soon as there was enough light, and this was taken shortly after the sun peeked over Bodie Butte.  I had to shoot some photos from the inside pointing out, because for so many years I had been on the other side of the glass shooting inwards! In 2013 we'll do another sunrise and interior workshop at Bodie October 13:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/p/bodie-night-photography-workshops-2013.html I was finally able to re-order this album and at least have the cover image I selected show up in the share as the largest one.  Here's the rest of the album:  https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5887226287122891953

Chicago Sun-Times Lays Off Entire Photo Staff

Chicago Sun-Times Lays Off Entire Photo Staff Sad to see 20 people lose their jobs: "More and more print publications are dumping full-time staff photographers in favor of freelance photojournalism. While also more cost-effective, they are able to get photos from virtually anywhere without having to dispatch a staff photographer. Given the climate of news publishing (and its digital transition), this sadly appears to be a trending course of action for news publishers." http://petapixel.com/2013/05/30/chicago-sun-times-lays-off-entire-photo-staff/ It's in part a direct consequence of people allowing their photos and videos to be published for free. http://petapixel.com/2013/05/30/chicago-sun-times-lays-off-entire-photo-staff/

Thinking of becoming a wedding photographer?

What if Social Media and Photo Sharing sites paid YOU?

What if Social Media and Photo Sharing sites paid YOU? Is social-community-as-privacy-abuse the ultimate business model, or will a more cooperative, revenue-sharing model ultimately win out? "...the very first conception of digital networked communication foresaw a way out of this trap. I am referring Ted Nelson’s early work, dating back to 1960. The first idea of networked digital media included a universal micropayment system, so that people would be paid when data they added to a network was used by someone else." "If the biggest computers had to pay for information, they wouldn’t cease to exist. Instead big computers would have to earn their way by providing new kinds of value. Spying and manipulating would no longer be business plans, because the raw materials would no longer be free." "In fact, the owners of the best computers would do fine in a world of monetized information, because that would be a world with a growing economy. In a world of free inform
