Bodie Open Until 10 pm Tonight, with Supermoon Rise

Image
Bodie Open Until 10 pm Tonight, with Supermoon Rise Bodie is offering one of its Ghost Stories tour nights tonight, which means that they let other park visitors stay late too.  It's also a "supermoon" full moon today, and in a setting like Bodie with an eastern horizon about 3.5 degrees in elevation it'll rise over the apparent horizon during or right after peak sky color, about 20 minutes after sunset.  It gets fully dark around 9:04 pm, so you can also have nearly an hour of full moon night photography before the park closes.  As you can imagine, the park can be super crowded on a night like this, so don't expect to have it, or any particular subject, to yourself, but for the novelty of the overall experience or for practice shooting interesting subjects (and people) under full moon lighting, it's nice that the park makes such opportunities available. For a much longer, much less crowded experience, we have two more nights left in Bodie this year, October 1

Burning Man 2012

Image
Burning Man 2012 As I saw posts on social media from people going to Burning Man next week, I realized that I hadn't gotten through all of my photos from the last time I went, in 2012. Between the heat, the dust and the darkness, the conditions can be challenging for photography, but with hundreds of works of art and mutant vehicles, it's a hotbed of creativity and a riot of color. In spite of a ban on commercial activity within the event, estimates on the economic impact on Northern Nevada alone ranged from $35 - 44M in 2012 (not including participants' preparations at home). Home Depot, Wal-Mart and many other retail establishments get cleaned out this week, selling building and camping supplies and groceries. www.MyPhotoGuides.com Burning Man 2012  #burningman   #Nevada #blackrockdesert #BLM #2012

Bernie Sanders in Reno Last Night

Before the Spill: Animas River, Durango, Colorado

Image
Before the Spill: Animas River, Durango, Colorado Fly fishing on the Animas River in Durango, Colorado in the fall.   This is where the toxic spill happened in the past week; over 100 miles of river has been poisoned so far. That toxic spill is what the "free market" looks like.  Mining companies are "free" to fail to set aside enough money to provide adequate cleanup, then go bankrupt, and the executives are free to do this knowingly and remain completely shielded from all liability. It happens over and over and over, all across the country. So mines that were never really economically viable with cleanup costs considered are free to develop anyway, and the rest of the country is free to have the burden of the costs dumped on them (not to mention having toxic waste dumped in their water supply). That's why there was a million gallons of toxic waste water for the EPA to (try to manage and) accidentally release in the first place... the market was free and unregu

The 2015 Perseid Meteor Shower is Underway

The 2015 Perseid Meteor Shower is Underway Meteor shower hourly rates will be fairly high tonight, and climb each night through Wednesday night. They'll also be slightly higher after midnight. So get out when you can this week for decent odds of capturing a meteor in your night shots, but if you only get out once, focus on the night of the 12th/13th from midnight until morning twilight.  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2015/08/2015-perseid-meteor-shower-photograph.html #perseid   #meteor   #perseids   #perseidmeteorshower   www.MyPhotoGuides.com

Summer Milky Way

Image
Summer Milky Way For the most part, the Milky Way is likely to be too high overhead to capture more of these types of Milky Way panorama shots this year, but I'm looking forward to next year!   On the other hand, during our Bodie workshops on August 15, October 11, and 12, although the Milky Way will intersect with the horizon in a fairly vertical fashion, on August 15 the bright galactic center doesn't set until after we leave the park at 1 am.   On October 11 and 12, we should have a good couple of hours of shooting the Milky Way before the galactic center sets.  With the earlier fall sunsets before 6:30, we'll have a lot of additional hours for light painting and star trails as well.  In the past I mainly looked at photos from past years to estimate Milky Way times, but I'm testing an app which represents the orientation of the Milky Way over a map, so photographers can plan their night shoots, noting the rise and set time of the galactic center.  I'll try to get
