Thank you TravelNevada for selecting my images for the front and back cover of your 2019 visitor's guide! It's a huge honor for me to have my images promoting travel and photography in our home state! For the front cover image, it was 102 degrees on that day, and we arrived to find the campground washed out and closed due to a flash flood a few days earlier, but we weren't going to let a little weather get in the way of the photography we were determined to capture! The model on the cover is Lori Hibbett. It's fun to see our Border Collie puppy Donnan that small and young on the cover, only a few weeks old at the time, and on his first road trip. He desperately wanted to herd the free range cattle all the way across Nevada. I love Nevada's Cathedral Gorge State Park, and can't wait to get back. I may have the opportunity to revisit later this month. #TravelNevada #DFMI #TravelPhotography #Nevada

Photographing California Groups on Facebook & Flickr

Image
Photographing California Groups on Facebook & Flickr I've set up two groups to share landscape photography from the area covered by my landscape photography guidebook "Photographing California Vol. 2 - South." On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1106754962840271/ On Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/groups/3137471@N21/ I'll periodically share new vistas and sites that I find, relative to ones already in there. If I'm not mistaken, the pages where this site is described are mentioned in posts in both groups. For more information on my 320-page guidebook in the PhotoTripUSA series by Laurent Martres, see this page on my Web site: https://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/photographing-california-travel-guidebook/

The Advantages of Winter Light

Image
The Advantages of Winter Light A while back I noticed that some photos I took of sand dunes in Death Valley looked particularly good. I suspected that it was the compass direction of the sun: it was shining at an angle close to the orientation of parallel ridges, so undulations in the dunes were showing some nice highlights and shadows. I tested the concept on following trips when the sun was at a similar compass angle, and that didn't seem to fully explain what was great about the original light and images. Recently I was calculating what size and placement of overhang would be necessary to provide passive solar energy: to shade a window in the summer, while allowing sunlight to stream in and heat the house in the winter. The results explained a lot. In the summer here at about 38 degrees latitude the sun gets about 76 degrees high. In December close to the winter solstice, it only gets 30 degrees high. I live in the Eastern Sierra, and the sun elevation is within a degree in the ...

After Google+

Anticipating Optimal Dune Lighting Via Sun Position

Image
Anticipating Optimal Dune Lighting Via Sun Position In the absence of interesting weather, are there optimum lighting conditions on certain dates and times to photograph some sand dunes? One of the advantages of going to the same place over and over again over time is that you can see how the light can change in a seasonal way, and you also run across unique lighting associated with a specific angle of the sun. As photographers, we have...(continued on my blog): http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/2018/11/19/anticipating-sun-sand-dune-lighting/ #landscapephotography #DeathValley #NationalPark #California

Oregon Dunes and Sea Stacks at Sunset

Image
Oregon Dunes and Sea Stacks at Sunset I spent about two weeks visiting Oregon this month. I visited this spot twice on the way up the coast, then for sunset, full moon at night, and sunrise photography on the way back. It was different every time; I couldn't get enough of it! Here the light on the dune edge was leading to the shoreline and sea stacks up the coast, inviting us to walk down the beach in the warm sunset light. https://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/photos/12807240/ via National Geographic #landscapephotography #Oregon #TravelOregon

Battery Point Lighthouse Sunrise Moon Set

Image
Battery Point Lighthouse Sunrise Moon Set One of my favorite shots on my Oregon Coast road trip ended up being on my way back, just into California at Crescent City. On National Geographic I explain why I went out of my way to be here, at this place and time. I used the app The Photographer's Ephemeris on my iPhone to test the concept of a sunrise moon set over the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City and it seemed to work well, so I set up shortly before sunrise to enjoy the anticipated moment as it unfolded. https://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/photos/12806549/ #landscapephotography #California #astrophotography
