Planning Milky Way Photography Milky Way over Mono Lake Tufa Rock Formations By now most of us have seen stunning Milky Way shots, but when we go out at night in the Northern Hemisphere we find that the Milky Way is not prominent in the sky all of the time and the moon often interferes w... #MyBeautifulEarth

Lunar Eclipse Time-lapse

Total Lunar Eclipse Tomorrow Night April 14-15, 2014

Total Lunar Eclipse Tomorrow Night April 14-15, 2014 Depending upon where you live on the planet, a lunar eclipse will occur starting either late April 14 or in the early morning hours of April 15.   Most of these shots were captured during the lunar eclipse December 21, 2010.  I used a Canon 5D Mark II with EF 16-35mm f/2.8 lens on the wide angle shots to capture a time-lapse movie, and I used my old 10 megapixel Canon 40D with 70-200mm lens and 2X teleconverter to pursue telephoto shots and track exposure changes.   Here are some ideas on shots you can pursue during a lunar eclipse:  http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/12/lunar-eclipse-photography-dec-10-2011.html Using a planning tool such as PhotoPills ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photopills/id596026805?mt=8&uo=4&at=10ldnC ) you can even line the moon up with natural or man-made landmarks, like I did during the lunar eclipse on December 10, 2011 in San Francisco: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2011/12/chasing-moon-luna...

The Wyld, "Odyssey"

The Wyld, "Odyssey" You may have heard this music during #sochiolympics  coverage.  Now you know what it is!  I heard it Sunday night and immediately knew it'd provide a great soundtrack to my latest footage. Thanks to the band for graciously granting permission for me to use the track to accompany my latest time-lapse video.  They have a page here on G+ in case you'd like to drop by:  https://plus.google.com/104548644804057612105 #musicvideo #YouTube   #sochi2014   #timelapsephotography   Originally shared by Jeff Sullivan Seasons of Topaz Seasons of Topaz is my latest time-lapse video, with "Sierra Wave" lenticular clouds, pogonip ice fog, rain, snow, sunrises, sunsets... a year's worth of weather in 3 minutes: http://youtu.be/W07_Yol2Ad4 The music, used with permission, is "Odyssey" (instrumental version) by The Wyld, as heard accompanying McDonald's commercials during the Sochi Winter Olympics.   Drop by their Google+ page and say ...

Supernova in Galaxy M82

Image
Supernova in Galaxy M82 You may have seen the news that we can see a supernova in Galaxy M82, but did you know that you can catch that galaxy using a DSLR and a 200mm lens?  I think that's it on the left, which would make the one in the top center M81 Bode's Galaxy, and the faint one in the lower right corner NGC3077 Irregular Galaxy.  I don't see other galaxies in that area in my sky app, but the S shape of the one in the center doesn't quote look right to me.  Am I "lost in space"? Aside from the scientific value of having a newly discovered and relatively close supernova to study, one cool thing about this event is that an unusual increase in brightness was being discussed on one of Fraser Cain's Virtual Star Party hangouts here on G+ before the news was widely known.  You can see them talking about it at around the 22 minute point in the YouTube copy of the hangout:  Virtual Star Party - January 19, 2014: Jupiter, the Moon and Nebulae #SupernovaM82   ...
