    Lovely and impressive church, but the Ottomans simply took it over. It was a Byzantine Church that was converted to a mosque once Constantinople fell in 1453. I wouldn't really argue that the Ottoman Empire dominated the civilized world. Militarily, sure, they were a power for a while. But they did not have anywhere near the cultural dominance that the Byzantines had.

    Alex Grossman Yes, I'm illustrating my own point (about myself) a little too well. I vaguely knew there was a huge gap in there between the Romans and the Ottomans, and the actual detailed history is very complicated given the strategic location between Asia and Europe, but I couldn't place some of the bigger cultures to credit. I need to spend more than a few hours in museums and more than a few days in Istanbul to learn more and piece it all together. When I return I hope to make it further inland, to Cappadocia, Mt.Nemrut, Side, and so on.

    I have found that the many of the most interesting Greek ruins are in Asia Minor, not necessarily modern day Greece
