Photographing the Southwest author Laurent Martres is now on G+
If you're not familiar with Laurent Martres, he literally "wrote the book" on photography travel in the Western United States with his award-winning Photographing the Southwest series (www.PhotoTripUSA.com).
After three books of his own, he enlisted the help of Greg Vaughn to complete one on Oregon. More recently he has recruited Gary Crabbe and I to cover California in two halves, North and South.
Laurent's books can save you years of scouting and many hundreds of dollars in travel costs trying to figure out the best places to shoot, time of day and seasonal considerations, and so on, for the price of a few gallons of gas (which you will now use more effectively). Believe me, I know... covering half of California in detail is no small feat, even though I'd already been living in and exploring the back roads and wilderness areas of the state for decades!
Welcome Laurent... we'll be looking forward to updates from your latest travels!

Wow
ReplyDeleteHis Arizona book is well worn in my collection!
ReplyDeleteNow if you could just add a section to each spot called "nearby places to sleep in your car for free"!!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThough the downside would be that I'd show up to one of those places to find another 43 people already snoring away in their cars...
Looking forward to the book, Jeff (and Gary).
By the way, which half do you have... north or south? (because the places I've seen you are pretty much in the middle!!)
ReplyDeleteStunning photographs!
ReplyDeleteVery cool, I'll have to buy those books.
ReplyDeleteJoaquin Baldwin Volume 1 is a great place to start, covering Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef and more. Then again, Volume 2 covers, The Wave, Antelope Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Sedona... I can't wait to get done with California - South so I can get on the road again!
ReplyDeleteJohn Moore I'm covering California-South, starting at Yosemite National Park and a line roughly from Mono Lake across to Santa Cruz. Consider that you and I have been meeting in the field since last June or so... late for wildflowers and not the best weather for either the desert or the California Coast, leaving the Sierra Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. It's time for fall colors and wrapping up high sites in the Sierra now, but I'll probably do another lap of the coast from Big Sur maybe all the way down to San Diego, several trips to Death Valley, and pass through the area around Mojave National Preserve, the Salton Sea, and possibly Sequoia before I run out of time to add locations and upgrade photos.
