  2. Ah, Aurora! NICE, Jeff Sullivan !!!

August 2000, I was at South Tufa for the Perseids. Under a nearly few days after-full moon, unfortunately. After being lakeside around midnight, I took a nap in the car, waking up around 3am or so. It took figuring it wasn't my eyes, or the windshield, to realize there was an aurora above the lake. I returned to the lake and enjoyed the shimmering curtain until the morning twilight drowned it out of the sky.

My one and only image that captured it in any detail was around midnight, when it was pretty much washed out by the moonlight, with a 35mm camera, more accident than purposeful. It was there but I didn't "see" it! None of the "intentional" 6x6 frames recorded it later on.

When I got home, I checked the spaceweather.com site to see if I had missed some notification. It had been only about a 20% chance at mid-latitudes. Had I been aware, I wouldn't have had any worthwhile degree of expectations, and wouldn't have had the mindset to even look. With the bright moonlight, it was about as washed out as the meteor shower.

Sometime, luck plays a card that's completely unexpected!
