Sunrise Moon Set at Anza Borrego

Sunrise Moon Set at Anza Borrego
There's the Ocatillo that was in the foreground of my last shot, on the edge of the dropoff. This is a sunrise moon set, which usually occurs the day after the full moon.

I posted this moon set image early for Stephen Krieg's #MoonriseMonday so you can plan ahead for for an eastward-facing for the February 6 sunset moon rise and for a westward-facing shot for the February 8 sunrise moon set.

I wrote a blog post back in 2006 with more detail on planning moon rise / set shots:

  5. Thanks everyone! To catch an eastward-facing for the February 6 sunset moon rise, the moon will be around 9 degrees up in the sky at sunset, so you don't need a particularly low horizon. For a westward-facing shot of the February 8 sunrise moon set however the moon will only be about 2 degrees up in the sky, so you'll need a fairly low horizon (with no hills or mountains higher than your shooting position) to catch the moon still in the sky when its exposure balances with the landscape exposure before the sun sets, and during the best sunset sky color a few minutes after the sun sets.
