Flickr's Resuming Development, or Just Getting a Cosmetic Makeover?

Flickr's Resuming Development, or Just Getting a Cosmetic Makeover?
Surely any sign of life over there opens the door for progress.

What do you think Flickr should change, revamp or add?

Not necessarily to improve Flickr... but to result in a better photo sharing site, which Google is probably in a much better position to develop.

I think that the G+ community reaction to the removal of the Google+ Incoming stream demonstrated a clear desire for content discovery. To use Flickr features as an example, Explore is a nice start, but they should offer a dashboard presenting several different algorithms for content discovery. If G+ would like to do that first (and patent it), all the better! It would be cool to select from 3 or 4 algorithms, and have the results displayed as thumbnails in 3 or 4 infinitely scrolling columns. In addition to discovery algorithms, let me choose to display thumbnails of the most recent (or most popular) photo posts from selected or all circles!

What features do you think Flickr (or Google+) should implement to improve photo sharing and interaction around photos?

Thanks Thomas Hawk for the heads up notice.

  1. Jeff, I'd like to see the incoming stream come back, but I'd also like to see a new view of my circle, where I can see the most recent posts by each person in the circle. For example, if I look at my "nature circle" I like to see
    Jeffrey Sullivan ->
    Thomas Hawk ->
    etc. Just another way of keep tabs and seeing what people post. It's really hard at the moment, as it requires visiting every person's stream. I miss a lot...I'd like to miss less.

  2. Wes Lum So a "by-person" look at the Stream, instead of a chronological one? Great Idea.
    I feel like I need a LOT more circle space to manage more interests (5000 was tight for photography alone... what if I want to see streams for travel, skiing, wine, news, politics?). The default chronological-only view might not give me the most relevant content per interest/circle, so both a by-source view and a prioritized view of higher-rated posts (scaled by number of views so small-distribution posts are not handicapped) would be really cool.

  3. Yeah...lifting the 5000 limit would be nice too. It's a pain at the moment, and I think it goes against how G+ is designed. I haven't visited Flikr in ages though...is it worth getting into?

    I post a token photo there now and then to keep in touch with friends who haven't made the switch. It still has a few key features which would make G+ an even better place for sharing and interacting around photography. Some are fairly obvious, like group functionality, some are more subtle, like geotagging/mapping photos, which exists on Picasa and Panoramio but doesn't appear to be in the G+ Photos user interface yet. One example of where Google could pull ahead would be to enhance the KML output capability from Panoramio and ensure that it works with Android apps like The Photographer's Ephemeris, which runs on Google Maps. I'd buy an Android tablet just to run those apps. Google could gain a huge advantage over Apple for running these apps if the Android version of TPE and Google Maps would enable running in offline mode, since so many places where photography is practiced does not have cellular data service (Yosemite, Death Valley, etc).

  6. Oh God, both sites have so much room to improve. Some very basics.

    1. Thread management. Both need a subscribe function.

    Flickr

    1. Needs group threads on mobile.
    2. Needs personal explore.
    3. Needs circles/buckets
    4. Needs the ability to hide threads.
    5. Needs more robust blocking tools.

    Google+

    1. Needs better album management / smartsets.
    2. Needs better ways to blog photos.
    3. Needs to redo the photos from your contacts page to not be so female face centric. should be based on recency/interestingness.
    4. Needs a stock photography option.

  7. FYI, this week the photo sharing site Flickr celebrated its 10th birthday.  They've invited members to nominate ten of their favorite images shared there over the past 10 years.  You can place your image in the #Flickr10 group on Flickr, and if you're lucky, perhaps Flickr will share your photos on their blog.

    Sadly my circles have been full for a while on G+ and I had to delete my Flickr circle to make room.  Circle functionality in general seems to have declined on G+, but I ran the Uncircle Inactives utility recently it says that 985 of my 5000 contacts have been inactive for 6+ months, so perhaps I can clear up more room again and re-add the Flickr user circle I shared on G+ a while back.
