Horsetail Fall... With Virtually no Water!

Horsetail Fall... With Virtually no Water!
On Friday morning I saw a photo from Thursday night that looked pretty good, so I had my favorite Mario Andretti impersonator Lori Hibbett drive me over in record time. The waterfall wasn't really flowing, but we hung around until sunset anyway and the sunset color on the moist rock looked a while lot like Horsetail Fall does when it's actually flowing. Eric Leslie met us, and let us know about the Yosemite Renaissance show opening that night, so headed over there after sunset. Sunrise wasn't anything to write home about (I shot the Wawona Tunnel instead of the view), but running around the Valley later, reflections in the Merced River kept us occupied with stunning mirror images.

We're off tomorrow on our next adventure... Red Rock Canyon on the way to Anza Borrego this weekend, then on to Death Valley next week!

  1. Interesting year for Horsetail! Sounds like you had a great time anyway. Enjoy the adventure Jeffrey Sullivan!

  2. Not sure why everyone wastes their time on this shot. How many identical images does the world need? A better idea to explore and find something unique. Photographers today are boring; continually copying each other....

  3. I've been to there one year when it was overcast the entire time, one year when it was frozen solid, and I skipped this year, figuring it would be rather dry. Some year I want to see it for myself.

    Jesse,

I don't believe subjects can be overdone. There is still the possibility for the new and unique, with every subject and every situation, regardless whether it's been well photographed, before.

  4. Jesse Estes I'm probably the least boring photographer you've met (I know, an ironic comment since we met at Oneonta Fall), and I'll expand upon that comment in a week. : )

  5. Mike Spinak I've been to the park when the waterfall could flow with the backlighting 8 or 10 times, but I've only see it flowing and lit on two sunsets. I used to estimate that it was available perhaps 15% of the time, but I think the odds of a decent flow and the sunset light are actually a lower than that.

  6. Richard Bitonti Where are you going to be next Wednesday the 7th? I have a couple of interesting shots in mind for that evening if you're still in the Death Valley area...

  10. Tony Payne I'm going to try to drive there tonight, so we can hike that canyon in the morning.

  11. Ha. I'm not actually suggesting you try to find it. But, I am 95% sure it's up there. What I know is not up there is an interesting view. Just ask Matthew Dillon and Rob Lopes
