ReplyDeleteJyoti Evans These "fin" formations are common in sandstone throughout the Southwest. The interesting thing about them is that they do not follow the layers that the sand making up the sandstone was deposited in. They cut right through the rock at random angles. They're probably formed as the earth's crust moves and forms cracks in the rocks, then water draws minerals to fill those tiny gaps.
ReplyDeleteYeh that's what seemed so unusual. I was wondering how vertical layers form, horizontal layers sure!! Amazing have you seen it elsewhere? Anyway excellent pic...
