I've added these 7 images to the front of my album of recent Yosemite photos, some from the #G -Yosemite2012 New Years photowalk weekend organized by Robert Scoble and attended by Thomas Hawk and Trey Ratcliff, some from a trip in February to pursue unique compositions of Horsetail Fall with Eric Leslie and Lori Hibbett.

ReplyDeletewow the falls are killer!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gretchen Thompson William Johnston Albert Wong and Dave Morrow (and everyone who shared and +1'd this). That waterfall on the far side lights up for the last few minutes of sunset, and for a couple of weeks per year it's masked perfectly by the vertical face of El Capitan to keep light off the adjacent rock closer to the setting sun. There was actually almost no water flowing on this day (the conditions that all have to come together are rare), so what's shining is actually mostly damp rock. This position had the added bonus of being able to shoot the entire valley side to side wide (24mm), yet the sun has just set behind Cathedral Rock, so while the exposure was difficult, it wasn't impossible to include the golden sunset light and some of the valley in the shadows. In addition to the rare sun alignment, previous snowfall and current weather also play a factor as well, so once I conceived of this, it still took me 4 more years arrive with the right conditions to get this shot!
