Have a broken DSLR Requiring Repair?
After ignoring my the shutter issues on an old Canon XTi for a long time, it finally locked up, I set it aside, then I eventually had error messages come up with my 40D as well. So I finally broke down and shipped both off for repair.
I found a repair service through eBay, and it turned out he was also a G+ user Thien Chau. He'll diagnose a camera's issues for free, and send an estimate. I only had a little more than a week before I needed to have 3 cameras operational in time for the #LV21012 G+ Las Vegas Photowalk, so I asked about quick turnaround. He repaired two issues in each camera, shutters on both, a power board on one and a shutter release button on the other, and express-shipped both back to me, all within one week and in time to bring them on my trip.
The bodies together are worth about $675 used, but they now have brand new Canon shutters which should last them for years more, and Thien backs his work with a a warranty so I can be confident it's done right. Over the course of the trip Nicole Sullivan used the 40D to produce 32GB of images and Thomas used the XTi produced 16GB, so I know they're working fine.
Awesome service, and very reasonably priced, and they both arrived looking a lot cleaner than when I sent them. Please don't send too many cameras to him too fast though... I don't want him to be too busy when my sometimes-sticky shutter button on my 5DII finally fails!
Here's his repair business:

Disclaimer: I received no free or discounted parts or services, the four repairs with expedited service and shipping came to a little over $360. I just like to recognize people for awesome work and customer service.

wow good to know thanks! does he do IR conversions too?
ReplyDeletethat's is awesome! I just picked up a canon 5D mark II and have been using my canon 30D for bang around/play time and I got the error 99 after attaching a sigma lens to it :( - 2nd time around with the error 99 and I can only get it to turn on occasional... soooo... this thread is perfect!
ReplyDeleteGreat post and very on topic for all #canonuser on here!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, can find a +Thien Chau on G+. Is this the correct spelling Jeffrey Sullivan?
ReplyDeleteExcellent #wordofmouthmarketing
ReplyDeleteDisagree with Trevor Tinker You get much protection from the Ebay. I have found many good or great small business for IT and other tech.
ReplyDelete+Ginger error 99 is an easy fix. Take out the memory card and battery. Turn off camera. Let sit for 30 min. Put battery in and card an turn on. Test it. Mine worked. It's a reset.
ReplyDeletealready did that Darlene Hildebrandt ~ It sounds like the motor to the shutter is just stuck or burnt out...sometimes it won't even turn on. :(
ReplyDeleteWow, I am definitely keeping this post with the information! I have a 40D and one lens that could use some TLC. There is little I can do locally, so will want to look into thien chau for help! Thank you so much for posting this. I hope he realizes that karma comes around...
ReplyDeleteThanks I'll keep this post in mind if I have some problem with my T3 :D
ReplyDeleteProbably too late for you, Rodrigo Fonseca.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Michael Nestler ... I wonder how this compares to Canon's own service.
ReplyDeleteGinger Grant bummer!
ReplyDeleteBj Bolender Different Thien Chau, here's the one I meant: Thien Chau...
ReplyDeleteCanon Factory service for me, they make it easy, free estimate, guarantee work and it's Canon...
ReplyDeleteMichael Harris Yes, free estimate, work guaranteed, genuine Canon parts, essentially the same except for one week turnaround and I suspect the price. The price was critical to salvaging these cameras at all, and the turnaround was critical to having them available in time.
ReplyDeleteCanon took 4 weeks to give me a quote on fixing an older 80-200 f2.8 that wasn't focusing at infinity. Quoted me $250 then took another 4 weeks to send it back unfixed saying they had no parts. Sent to a local company and in two weeks it was fixed for $95.
ReplyDeleteIf your used car say a Ford is broken an no warrantee do you go to the ford dealer to fix it? Probably not their prices are higher than smaller garages.
ReplyDeleteAlways extenuating conditions, I've had good luck with Canon and some real horror stories with 3rd party fixers, good luck...
ReplyDeleteI've had good and bad luck with both.
ReplyDeleteHmm, haven't had to repair any cameras yet, but I'll keep them in mind!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, have the folks at Cannon seen the work you do with their cameras?
ReplyDeleteещё никогда неудавалось видеть такие классные фото- спасибо
ReplyDeleteThanx for sharing earths beauty. Beautiful pictures .
ReplyDeleteКрасиво! Люблю небо в необычных ракурсах!Спасибо!
ReplyDeleteJ. Rae Chip FYI for your broken 50D...
ReplyDeleteFYI Joseph Trinh , meet Thien Chau and see the link above to his Camera Revivor repair service. The two cameras he repaired are still working, and with a shutter count over 330,000 on my Canon 5D Mark II, I may be sending him that soon if it fails.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff.
