  1. This was not a NASA launch, but a private company: Orbital Sciences.

  2. Oh,my that is sad. So scary glad no one was hurt. Don't get discouraged we still believe in y'all.

  3. NASA didn't build it, or launch it.  The entire thing was handled by the commercial company Orbital Sciences Corporation.

  7. Yesterday the first launch went as planned ...me and my family and others watched the rocket across our horizon for eastern nc...but yet I find they say they aborted due to a sailboat? OK the truth...that rocket suffered a malfunction and they were forced to crash it into the ocean....the one that exploded today was a backup..why? Because one...me and about 20 other people saw the first launch yesterday and two...if you people go on youtube...search the video from Mondays "failed" launch u will see that rocket had a black tip...the rocket that blew up 6 seconds after takeoff today had a white tip. What a total failure across the board. ...

  9. How did they manage to get to the moon again?

  10. Jan Wildenhain  Technically this was a private company contracted to conduct the resupply mission.  I've corrected the description above.

  11. Jimmy Weathers  If that's true, there should be many thousands of witnesses and tens of thousands of photos on the Internet.  I'm not disagreeing with you, just looking forward to seeing the evidence.

  12. Wiiliam Hoffman  Yes, apparently the Ukrainian-built first stage failed:
"The Antares 130 first stage is built by Ukrainian company Yuzhnoe..."

  13. Fortunately there was a "Plan B" for resupply of the ISS:
Russian Progress M-25M docks with the ISS

Interesting that the media is all over the explosion, but not the successful resupply mission which followed only hours later.

You can bet that someone will notice that a Ukranian part failed on the first launch, then a Russian launch succeeded a short while afterwards.  Let the conspiracy theories begin.

  14. Jeff Sullivan You mean that the Russians are reaching out a helping hand to US astronauts were we Westerners put them on sanctions ;)

  15. Jan Wildenhain  No, you just said that.  It's an international mission with an international crew: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition41/index.html#.VFEIBdV4rYg

Apparently there were redundant international launches scheduled to handle the possibility of a launch failure.  Mission accomplished.

  18. Oh and just to follow up on my previous post,, if u go onto youtube and look at Mondays "failed" launch...you will see that rocket had a black tip ...the rocket that launched Tuesday was solid white... I've also read reports that other people claimed to have witnessed a rocket launch on Monday too... so something is off

  20. Fatin Ibn Saad  The thousands of people watching the live feed with audio from the control room did not see any evidence of that.
Launching rockets is a complex and dangerous undertaking, and many rockets have blown up during launch.  Sometimes the simple explanation is the most likely.  Stuff happens in complex systems, and launch failures probably happen slightly more often in a roughly 50 year old rocket reconditioned to new specifications.
